Tunable electronic properties of the GeC/MoS2 heterostructures: A first-principles study

Dongping Meng et al.

Summary: First-principle calculations based on density functional theory were used to investigate the structural and electronic properties of GeC/MoS2 heterostructures. The results showed that the AB stacking GeC/MoS2 hetero-bilayer possessed a stable structure and a type-II band alignment, which could effectively separate photo-generated electron-hole pairs. The bandgap could be modulated by applying in-plane biaxial strain while maintaining the type-II band alignment. The controllable band gaps could also be realized in trilayer MoS2/GeC/MoS2 and GeC/MoS2/GeC due to the influence of van der Waals interaction.

Summary: Room-temperature ferromagnetic atomically thin transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) provide a novel platform for discovering new physical phenomena in the 2D limit and developing next-generation spintronic applications. However, the research on room-temperature ferromagnetism in TMC semiconductors and metals faces challenges, including the inconsistency between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results.

Characterization of two dimensional ferromagnetic binary and Janus manganese dichalcogenides

M. Azmoonfar et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the electronic, magnetic, and thermal properties of two-dimensional binary MnX2 and Janus MnXX' monolayers using first-principles and anisotropic Heisenberg models. The monolayers exhibit stable ferromagnetic ground state with strength of magnetic anisotropy determined by the type of chalcogen atoms. The spin-polarized electronic structure depends strongly on the chalcogen atoms, ranging from semiconductor to metallic states. The dispersion relation of magnetic excited states was obtained using the linear order Holstein-Primakoff transformation. The Curie temperature was found to be high for Mn dichalcogenides, and the phonon and magnon contributions to the heat capacity were estimated at low temperature.

Magnon Straintronics in the 2D van der Waals Ferromagnet CrSBr from First-Principles br

Dorye L. Esteras et al.

Summary: The recent isolation of two-dimensional magnets has opened up exciting possibilities for spintronics and magnonics in miniaturization. Atomically thin materials have outstanding deformation capacity, which allows their properties to be controlled through strain engineering. In this study, the magnetic properties, magnon dispersion, and spin dynamics of the air-stable 2D magnetic semiconductor CrSBr under mechanical strain were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results provide a detailed analysis of the competing interactions that stabilize the long-range ferromagnetic order in the monolayer. It is shown that the magnon dynamics of CrSBr can be selectively modified along different crystallographic directions by applied strain, indicating the potential of this quasi-1D electronic system for magnon straintronics applications. Additionally, a 30% increase in TC, which allows spin waves to propagate at higher temperatures, is predicted to be driven by strain.

Two-dimensional magnetoelectric multiferroics in a MnSTe/In2Se3 heterobilayer with ferroelectrically controllable skyrmions

Kaiying Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, the strong magnetoelectric coupling in a multiferroic heterobilayer composed of 2D MnSTe and ??-In2Se3 is proposed through first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. By switching the electric polarization in ferroelectric ??-In2Se3, the creation and annihilation of topological magnetic phases can be achieved in this system, resulting in ferroelectrically controllable skyrmions. This feature is closely related to a physical quantity D2/|KJ|, which is applicable for describing the required conditions for such physics. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent behavior of the topological magnetic phases is systematically discussed. This study not only enriches the research on 2D magnetoelectric multiferroics but also opens up a promising avenue for realizing new skyrmionic device concepts.

Intrinsic Polarization-Induced Enhanced Ferromagnetism and Self-Doped p-n Junctions in CrBr3/GaN van der Waals Heterostructures

Mingjun Yang et al.

Summary: This research presents a new strategy to tune the Curie temperature and electronic structures of a ferromagnetic CrBr3 monolayer by forming CrBr3/GaN van der Waals heterostructures. The combination of CrBr3 monolayer with N-terminated GaN nanosheets leads to enhanced FM coupling and self-doping effect, resulting in an increased Curie temperature. This work not only provides an efficient scheme to boost the Curie temperature of the CrBr3 monolayer, but also opens up a new route to realize nonvolatile van der Waals p-n junctions.

Environmental screening and ligand-field effects to magnetism in CrI3 monolayer

D. Soriano et al.

Summary: By down-folding Hubbard models from ab initio calculations, this study uncovers the microscopic origin of magnetism in the CrI3 monolayer, identifying a multi-orbital super-exchange mechanism as the key factor. The research also demonstrates how environmental screening, such as encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride, affects the Coulomb interaction and subsequently controls the magnetic properties. The interplay between different exchange interactions influences the magnon dispersion and the Curie temperature in a non-trivial manner.

Imran Khan et al.

Summary: By utilizing the magnetic proximity effect and biaxial strain, the magnetic ground state, band gap enhancement, and valley polarization in WSe2/CrSnSe3 heterostructures can be controlled. Different magnetic anisotropy and Curie temperatures were observed in pristine and strained structures. Strain also enhanced valley splittings, providing a potential method to tune the valley splitting in the heterostructures.
