Gas-Particle Partitioning of Semivolatile Organic Compounds in a Residence: Influence of Particles from Candles, Cooking, and Outdoors

Kasper Kristensen et al.

Summary: Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are an important category of indoor pollutants. The partitioning of SVOCs between airborne particles and the adjacent air significantly influences human exposure and uptake. This study provides direct evidence that indoor particle pollution from cooking, candle use, and outdoor particle infiltration strongly affects the gas-particle phase distribution of specific indoor SVOCs.

Possible Effects of Ozone Chemistry on the Phase Behavior of Skin Oil and Cooking Oil Films and Particles Indoors

Shaun Xu et al.

Summary: This study observed the phase behavior of skin oil and cooking oil particles during ozone exposure using optical microscopy. It was found that a new phase was formed after exposure to ozone. Based on the results and models, the time required for the formation of a new phase under indoor conditions was predicted.

Daytime SO2 chemistry on ubiquitous urban surfaces as a source of organic sulfur compounds in ambient air

Huifan Deng et al.

Summary: The reaction of sulfur dioxide (SO2) with surface-bound compounds on atmospheric aerosols leads to the formation of organic sulfur (OS) compounds, which affects air quality and climate. In this study, we demonstrated that the heterogeneous reaction of SO2 with authentic urban grime under near-ultraviolet sunlight leads to the release of various organic compounds, including OS, in the gas phase. Calculations showed that building surfaces in the core area of Guangzhou absorb 15 times more SO2 than aerosol surfaces, resulting in the production of about 20 ng/m3 of OS, which represents a significant fraction of observed OS compounds in aerosols in Chinese megacities.

Gas-Particle Uptake and Hygroscopic Growth by Organosulfate Particles

Paul E. Ohno et al.

Summary: Organosulfate particles, with their high hygroscopicity and viscosity, play a crucial role in gas-particle interactions in the Earth's atmosphere. The uptake of these particles is affected by environmental humidity and nitrogen oxide concentrations, while viscosity and kinetic limitations have minimal impact on the uptake. These findings are significant for simplifying models of atmospheric chemistry and pollutant transport.

Assessing Human Exposure to SVOCs in Materials, Products, and Articles: A Modular Mechanistic Framework

Clara M. A. Eichler et al.

Summary: A critical review of indoor chemical emissions and exposure led to the proposal of a modular mechanistic framework for predicting human exposure to SVOCs. The framework allows for integration of new knowledge, other chemical classes of indoor pollutants, and mechanistic processes relevant to human exposure indoors.

Observing ozone chemistry in an occupied residence

Yingjun Liu et al.

Summary: This study explored indoor ozone chemistry in a house in California with two adult inhabitants, finding that multiple VOCs exhibited clear contributions from ozone-initiated chemistry indoors. These chemicals include compounds commonly reported from ozone interactions with indoor surfaces and human skin lipids. Additionally, the study observed that ozone-driven chemistry continued to produce specific VOCs even after the occupants had been away from the house for several days.

Kinetic multi-layer model of film formation, growth, and chemistry (KM-FILM): Boundary layer processes, multi-layer adsorption, bulk diffusion, and heterogeneous reactions

Pascale S. J. Lakey et al.

Summary: Indoors, the large surface area-to-volume ratios make heterogeneous interactions especially important, causing semi-volatile organic compounds to form thin organic films on impermeable surfaces. Studies show that under highly turbulent conditions, film growth rate can significantly increase, while films adopting an ultra-viscous state result in a significant decrease in growth rate.

Evaluating Indoor Air Chemical Diversity, Indoor-to-Outdoor Emissions, and Surface Reservoirs Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Roger Sheu et al.

Summary: Detailed offline speciation of gas- and particle-phase organic compounds was conducted using gas/liquid chromatography with traditional and high-resolution mass spectrometers in a hybrid targeted/nontargeted analysis. Observations showed that indoor gas-phase organic compounds had higher abundances compared to outdoor environments and were strongly correlated with controlled emissions of tracer species. After ventilation, indoor emissions of volatile organic compounds doubled.
