A recent overview of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) removal by functional framework materials

Huarui Li et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the design principles, properties, and applications of functional framework materials, with a special emphasis on PFAS removal. While framework materials have demonstrated the capability to adsorb and catalytically degrade PFAS, there is ongoing debate regarding their practical use in water purification. The review also discusses the potential of framework materials for catalytic degradation of PFAS based on limited studies, and presents the challenges and prospects for sustainable design in using framework materials to remove and degrade PFAS in wastewater.

Facile Fabrication of Amino Functionalized Magnetic Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes for Removal of Congo Red from Aqueous Solutions

Guobin Song et al.

Summary: In this study, amino functionalized magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNT-NH2) were prepared via a facile one-pot solvothermal method, and their sorptive removal efficiency of the anionic dye Congo red (CR) from water was investigated. The composite with triethylenetetramine showed higher removal efficiency due to its higher content of amino groups. Characterization analyses confirmed its excellent magnetic separation property and successful introduction of amino groups on MMWCNTs. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a three-stage diffusion mechanism was observed. The adsorption performance of MMWCNT-NH2-3 showed significant improvement after amino functionalization, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 322.7 mg/g. Selective adsorption of anionic dye was achieved due to electrostatic attraction and electron donor-acceptor interaction. The prepared MMWCNT-NH2-3 exhibited excellent reusability performance and could be a promising adsorbent for the removal of anionic dye from wastewater.

Long-distance transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a Swedish drinking water aquifer

Mattias Sorengard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transport and distribution of PFAS in an urban groundwater aquifer affected by PFAS contamination. The military training site was identified as the main source of PFAS contamination in drinking water extraction areas. Transport variations and dilution from adjacent aquifers were found to impact PFAS concentrations in the groundwater.

PFAS as emerging pollutants in the environment: A challenge with FAU type and silver-FAU exchanged zeolites for their removal from water

Maura Mancinelli et al.

Summary: The adsorption efficiency of Y-type zeolites with different silica/alumina ratios towards perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate was studied. The results showed that these materials can be successfully used for the decontamination of water from perfluoroalkyl chemicals. Additionally, the introduction of silver onto the zeolites improved the performances in removing PFAS from water.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Thermal Regeneration of Spent Granular Activated Carbon Presents an Opportunity to Break the Forever PFAS Cycle

Busra Sonmez Baghirzade et al.

Summary: Extensive use of PFAS has led to their presence in natural waters, and conventional methods for PFAS removal such as adsorption onto GAC may result in PFAS-laden waste streams. Inadequate disposal of PFAS-laden GAC can reintroduce PFAS into the aquatic cycle, highlighting the need for developing approaches for managing PFAS-laden GAC.

Effect of granular activated carbon and other porous materials on thermal decomposition of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Mechanisms and implications for water purification

Pavankumar Challa Sasi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that thermal decomposition of PFCAs and GenX can occur during conventional thermal treatment, and the addition of GAC or other highly porous materials can accelerate the decomposition process and alter its pathways. The presence of GAC enhances the decomposition rate by compressing the intermediate sublimation zone of PFCAs and changing their thermal decomposition pathways.

Iarin Medeiros Militao et al.

Summary: Emerging adsorbents derived from natural and renewable sources are being explored as environmentally friendly and more efficient alternatives to conventional activated carbon for PFAS removal. These alternative adsorbents are evaluated for their efficacy in removing PFAS and their practicality in real water treatment, reuse, and continuous operation. Further research and development are needed to explore the potential applications of these adsorbents and address the research needs for their advancement.
