What does not kill it makes it stronger! The tolerance of the F1 larvae of Chironomus xanthus to a neonicotinoid insecticide formulation

Rone S. Barbosa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a thiamethoxam-based formulation on a population of insects and found that the offspring showed higher tolerance to the formulation, suggesting that insect resistance to neonicotinoids may be associated with improved biological functions in the progeny.

Acute and Chronic Effects of Clothianidin, Thiamethoxam and Methomyl on Chironomus dilutus

Bryn M. Phillips et al.

Summary: This study provides important data on the tolerance thresholds of Chironomus dilutus to neonicotinoid and carbamate pesticides, supporting the development of water quality criteria. The results show that the effect concentrations of neonicotinoids compared favorably to previously published LC50 concentrations, while carbamate pesticide concentrations were within the acute survival range for Chironomus species.

The multigenerational effects of clothianidin on Chironomus xanthus: Larvae exposed to this acetylcholine super agonist show no clear resistance

Bruno Silva Melo et al.

Summary: This study found that CLO is highly toxic to the non-target species Chironomus xanthus and the F1 generation resulting from parents exposed to CLO does not show clear resistance to the insecticide.

Is there a common mechanism of neonicotinoid resistance among insects? Preliminary results show that F1 larvae of pre-exposed Chironomus xanthus are more tolerant to imidacloprid

Bruno Silva Melo et al.

Summary: This study found that environmentally relevant concentrations of IMI have negative effects on the development of non-target insect C. xanthus larvae, but a potential physiological adaptation from parental generation to filial generation may determine the resistance to neonicotinoids in pest species.
