Hybrid cement composite-based sensor for in-situ chloride monitoring in concrete structures

Bo Huang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a rugged cementitious composite sensor for monitoring chloride ingress in concrete structures is introduced. The sensor consists of a chloride ion-selective functionalized graphene film sandwiched between two cementitious composites. The sensor's response to different chloride concentrations was characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The study also quantified the impact of pore solution, temperature, and humidity on the sensor's response. The experimental results showed that the sensor successfully measured chloride concentration changes with good sensitivity and had good reversibility and stability.

Summary: This research utilizes a combination of micro-CT and SEM techniques to study the microstructures and failure mechanisms of a hybrid unidirectional/woven composite laminate. The study reveals matrix damage in both woven and unidirectional laminae, as well as distinct delamination between the UD laminae and the woven composites. The potential of combining micro-CT with SEM in investigating local damage and intrinsic failure mechanisms in HUWCLs at microscale is demonstrated.

Effects of Thermal Conductive Materials on the Freeze-Thaw Resistance of Concrete

Byeong-Hun Woo et al.

Summary: In this study, silicon carbide, steel fiber, and graphite were used to enhance the thermal conductivity of concrete. Steel fiber compensated for the negative effects of graphite and improved thermal durability, while silicon carbide helped to enhance thermal durability in the same way as steel fiber. The study concluded that using 50% silicon carbide was the most effective approach, and caution should be taken when considering the content of graphite or other conductive materials in further studies.
