High-efficiency decontamination of Pb(II) and tetracycline in contaminated water using ball-milled magnetic bone derived biochar

Jianhu Qu et al.

Summary: Bone-derived biochar loaded with Fe3O4 (MBBCBM) was synthesized by ball-milling process and exhibited excellent adsorption capacities for Pb(II) (339.39 mg/g) and TC (237.51 mg/g) in water. The adsorption process achieved equilibrium within 20/100 min and was well described by Avrami fractional-order model. The MBBCBM demonstrated high stability over a wide pH range, tolerance to co-existing ions, and retained its adsorption performance after three cycles.

Critical Review on the Mechanisms of Fe2+Regeneration in the Electro-Fenton Process: Fundamentals and Boosting Strategies

Fengxia Deng et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of Fe3+ cathodic reduction in the electro-Fenton (EF) process. Different strategies to improve the reduction rate are discussed, categorized into electron transfer control and mass transport control. Electron transfer control strategies include creating active sites in carbon and metal-based materials and using emerging techniques like single-atom catalysis or confinement effects. Mass transport control approaches involve magnetic fields, pulse electrolysis, interfacial Joule heating effects, and photoirradiation. Challenges and future prospects are also mentioned. This review aims to clarify the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling process in the EF process, providing insights for the smart design of highly effective wastewater treatment and valorization systems at an industrial scale.

Interplay of Active Sites and Microenvironment in High-Rate Electrosynthesis of H2O2 on Doped Carbon

Zhuo Xing et al.

Summary: Heteroatom doping is widely used in electrocatalyst design to improve performance, but it can also affect the wetting properties of the catalyst microenvironment. This study investigates the interplay between active sites and microenvironment in the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 on doped carbon. The results show that while doping increases the intrinsic activity for H2O2 production, the optimal production rate is achieved with a moderately doped carbon catalyst due to changes in wetting characteristics.

A comparative study of carbon nanotube characteristics synthesized from various biomass precursors through hydrothermal techniques and their potential applications

J. B. Mathangi et al.

Summary: Preparing low-cost carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from renewable biomass resources has great potential and importance. This article describes the synthesis of CNTs from biomass precursors using the hydrothermal technique with ferrocene as a catalyst for energy storage and atmosphere decontamination. The prepared CNTs were characterized using XRD, Raman, and SEM analysis. TGSD-CNT, with a band gap of 2.01 eV, has become a hot topic in various scientific achievements such as environmental pollution mitigation and energy generation and storage. The emission spectrum of TGSD-CNT was studied using the 1931 chromaticity diagram of CIE. Batch adsorption experiments and comparative analysis were conducted to study the performance of CAC and TGSD-CNT. Therefore, converting cheap biomass into high-value materials like CNTs becomes practical, feasible, and reduces production costs. The synthesized TGSD-CNT is a useful material for applications such as heavy metal sorption and photovoltaic devices.

A microbubble-assisted rotary tubular titanium cathode for boosting Fenton's reagents in the electro-Fenton process

Shan Qiu et al.

Summary: The microbubble-assisted rotary tubular titanium cathode (MRTTC) significantly enhanced H2O2 accumulation and Fe3+ reduction in the electro-Fenton (EF) process, leading to improved degradation of organic pollutants. The synergistic effect between the rotating and microbubble-assisted cathodes in MRTTC intensified H2O2 accumulation, while the newly formed O2-center dot provided an additional reduction pathway for Fe3+ reduction, contributing to the effectiveness of MRTTC in treating antibiotic wastewater.

The sustainable, one-pot and high-yield synthesis of ultrafine carbonaceous nanospheres with high anionic separation efficiency

Qiming Zhao et al.

Summary: This study introduces a green and sustainable method for fabricating monodisperse ultrafine carbonaceous nanospheres (UCNSs) with controllable sizes, utilizing a high-concentration hydrothermal carbonization process. A novel strategy based on thiol-ene click chemistry is proposed to graft hyperbranched polyquaternary amine onto UCNSs without compromising their monodispersity. The grafted UCNSs show improved separation efficiencies in ion chromatography packing, outperforming common commercial latex-agglomerated counterparts.

Summary: By preparing a novel air-breathing gas diffusion electrode (GDE) with multiform hydrophobic layers, the problems of high energy consumption, low cathodic oxygen transfer rate, and low H2O2 production efficiency in the electro-Fenton (EF) technology can be addressed. This new GDE allows air to diffuse to the triphase interface spontaneously, improving the oxygen transfer rate and expanding the triphase interfaces to achieve a high H2O2 accumulation.
