Image-Based Machine Learning Algorithms for Disease Characterization in the Human Type 1 Diabetes Pancreas

Xiaohan Tang et al.

Summary: Recent data suggests that type 1 diabetes not only affects the islets of Langerhans containing beta cells, but also the surrounding exocrine compartment. By using digital pathology and machine learning algorithms, researchers analyzed high-resolution images of human pancreata to compare tissue composition in individuals with or at risk for type 1 diabetes with those without diabetes. The study found that type 1 diabetes alters the exocrine area, acinar cell density, and size, with differences correlating with the presence of insulin-positive cells remaining in the pancreas.

Could Gait Biomechanics Become a Marker of Atypical Neuronal Circuitry in Human Development?-The Example of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Marine Jequier Gygax et al.

Summary: This paper integrates knowledge from neurosciences and biomechanics to outline the relationships between neuronal network maturation, behavior, and gait in human development. Using ASD as a case study, the absence of biological markers poses a challenge in correlating behavioral development with brain structure alterations. Gait biomechanics emerges as a potential motor phenotype and biomarker, which could be correlated to neuronal network maturation in both normal and atypical developmental trajectories, such as in ASD.
