Mesenchymal stromal cells plus basiliximab, calcineurin inhibitor as treatment of steroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease: a multicenter, randomized, phase 3, open-label trial

Ke Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of combining mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) with basiliximab and calcineurin inhibitor as second-line therapy for steroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease (SR aGVHD). Results showed that MSCs plus second-line treatments improved overall response and durable overall response, prolonged failure-free survival, and reduced the incidence of chronic GVHD. The study also found that the combination therapy did not increase the risk of tumor relapse and was well-tolerated.

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Treating Steroid-Resistant Acute and Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease: A Multicenter Compassionate Use Experience

Maria del Mar Macias-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Clinical trials using MSC therapy for GVHD have shown promising results, with a high overall response rate in patients. For patients with acute GVHD, age at the time of HSCT was found to be the only predictor inversely correlated with survival. Adverse events during treatment were reported but all resolved without long-term consequences, demonstrating the safety of MSC therapy.

Mesenchymal stromal cells as treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome. Case Reports following hematopoietic cell transplantation and a review

Behnam Sadeghi et al.

Summary: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening lung disease. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been evaluated as a therapy for ARDS, and the use of MSCs for ARDS induced by Covid-19 has shown positive results. Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of MSCs in treating sepsis and ARDS.

Co-transplantation of mesenchymal stromal cell and haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell with TCR αβ depletion in children with primary immunodeficiency syndromes

Didem Atay et al.

Summary: The study suggests that haploidentical transplantation with TCRαβ depletion and co-transplantation of MSCs may result in rapid engraftment, low incidence of significant acute and chronic GVHD, and acceptable post-transplantation morbidity, especially in patients diagnosed with SCID and may be considered for children with PIDs.
