Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) for agro-food waste and wastewater treatment, and sustainable bioenergy-A review

S. V. Ramanaiah et al.

Summary: Farming and food manufacturing contribute more than half of the world's food production, but they also generate large amounts of organic wastes and byproducts that harm the environment and climate. Proper management of agro-food waste and wastewater is crucial for waste reduction and resource optimization. Biotechnology, particularly bioelectrochemical systems, offers promising solutions for efficiently reducing waste and recovering energy and chemicals. This review provides an overview of agro-food waste and wastewater remediation possibilities using bioelectrochemical-based systems, discussing current and future potential applications.

A state-of-the-art review and guidelines for enhancing nitrate removal in bio-electrochemical systems (BES)

Sharvari Sunil Gadegaonkar et al.

Summary: Excess unmanaged nitrogen pollution is detrimental to the environment. The integration of biological nitrogen removal in bio-electrochemical systems (BES) provides a green technology solution for achieving efficient and cost-effective wastewater treatment. This analysis highlights the importance of electrode materials, operational parameters, and microbial community structure in optimizing NO3 removal efficiencies in BES. Additionally, the study provides evidence of other nitrogen removal processes, such as anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) and dissimilatory NO3 reduction to ammonium (DNRA), supported by electrochemical processes in BES.

Enhancing organic contaminant degradation through integrating advanced oxidation processes with microbial electrochemical systems

Kaichao Yang et al.

Summary: Microbial electrochemical systems (MES) are being studied for their ability to degrade organic contaminants with lower energy requirements, but the degradation of recalcitrant compounds remains challenging. To improve contaminant removal in MES, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are synergistically integrated, creating cooperative processes like bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) and enhanced bioanodes. BEF allows for high contaminant degradation efficiency with low energy consumption by recovering energy from organic wastes at the anode. Modifying bioanodes with catalytic oxidation materials, such as photocatalysts and MnO2, enables organic removal through the synergy of catalysis and biodegradation. This paper provides a concise review of the integration of AOPs with MES, discussing challenges such as understanding electron transfer mechanisms, developing cost-effective membranes, and exploiting synergistic effects between functional materials and bacteria, all of which are crucial for the development of AOP-MES treatment systems.

A review on the landfill leachate treatment technologies and application prospects of three-dimensional electrode technology

Dayang Yu et al.

Summary: With the expansion of urbanisation, the issue of municipal solid waste disposal has worsened due to the increasing amount of solid waste produced by urban residents. Among various landfill leachate treatment technologies, advanced oxidation technology, particularly three-dimensional (3D) electrode technology, has shown promising results in effectively treating landfill leachate with minimal secondary pollution. This article aims to compare existing landfill leachate treatment technologies, summarize the application scenarios of 3D electrode technology, discuss its advantages in landfill leachate treatment, and provide a future outlook for the technology. It is expected to be helpful for researchers interested in landfill leachate treatment field.

Bioelectrochemical treatment of municipal solid waste landfill mature leachate and dairy wastewater as co-substrates

Silvia Bolognesi et al.

Summary: This study reports on the start-up and operation of two dual-chamber MFCs with different electrodes' structure for the treatment of mature municipal solid waste landfill leachate. The maximum COD removal efficiency achieved was 84.9% at low leachate/dairy mix, and 66.3% with 7.6% coulombic efficiency (CE) at a leachate/dairy ratio of 20%. Operational issues and effects of cells' architecture and electrode materials on systems' performance are analyzed and discussed.
