Passive root uptake was the main route for the entry of OPEs and BFRs into water hyacinth, and they accumulated mainly in the roots. Summary: Wearing of vehicle parts can release potentially toxic chemicals into the environment, posing risks to wildlife and humans. This study investigated the occurrence, source, and risks of these chemicals in the water supply catchment of Guangzhou. The results showed that certain chemicals were predominant in surface water and groundwater, and unexpected concentrations were found. Additionally, a toxic ozonation product was extensively detected in source waters. This study provides important information for chemical management and highlights the need to address the risks associated with certain chemicals in the water supply.

Potentially hazardous elements in sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum: an ecotoxicological risk assessment in Milic Wetland, Samsun, Turkiye

Summary: Potentially hazardous elements accumulate in the wetlands in Turkiye, including the Milic Wetland. However, the levels of PHE accumulation in the sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum in the Milic Wetland are relatively low, posing no major health risks. It is recommended to prevent agricultural pesticides and fertilizers from entering the wetland and consider using Ceratophyllum demersum for wetland remediation.

Ecotoxicological risk assessment for sediments of cavuslu stream in Giresun, Turkey: association between garbage disposal facility and metallic accumulation

Summary: This paper aimed to investigate the potential accumulation of toxic elements in the surface sediments of cavuslu Stream in Giresun, Turkey, and determine any association between a garbage disposal facility and ecotoxicity or human health risk. Results showed that certain metals in the sediments were above average shale levels, indicating potential toxic responses in benthic organisms. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that anthropogenic pollution, likely from the GDF, played a major role in the metal accumulation in the sediments of the cavuslu Stream.

Bioaccumulation and translocation of organophosphate esters in a Mangrove Nature Reserve from the Pearl River Estuary, South China

Summary: This study investigates the distribution and bioaccumulation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in mangrove ecosystems. It was found that OPEs were mainly absorbed in aboveground tissues of mangrove plants and their concentrations in mangrove animals were related to lipid contents, feeding habits, and hydrophobicity of OPEs. The study highlights the bioaccumulation risk of OPEs in mangrove biota.

Physiological response and tolerance of Myriophyllum aquaticum to a wide range of ammonium concentrations

Summary: This study investigated the physiological response and tolerance mechanism of Myriophyllum aquaticum to different concentrations of ammonia nitrogen. The results showed that M. aquaticum can tolerate high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and has a high nutrient uptake ability. The suitable range of ammonia nitrogen concentration is 0.5-20 mM. The high tolerance of M. aquaticum is mainly attributed to the balance of free ammonia nitrogen content in tissues, as well as improved nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant system.

Uptake and translocation of organophosphate esters by plants: Impacts of chemical structure, plant cultivar and copper

Enhanced remediation of BDE-209 in contaminated mangrove sediment by planting and aquaculture effluent

Summary: This study investigated the effects of aquaculture effluent (AE) on the remediation and uptake of toxic flame retardant (BDE-209) by mangrove species. The results showed that AE addition enhanced the removal of BDE-209 in planted mangrove sediments, as well as the production of debrominated congeners (de-PBDEs) in both planted and unplanted sediments. Additionally, AE addition increased the uptake of BDE-209 by Ko roots and de-PBDEs in both Ko and Am, demonstrating the potential enhancement of phytoremediation in contaminated sediments.

Summary: The macrophyte Myriophyllum aquaticum has a strong resistance to high NH4+ concentrations and is highly effective in treating swine wastewater. Transcriptional up-regulation of light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding proteins genes and transcriptional regulation of catalase genes play important roles in NH4+ resistance and balancing reactive oxygen species in plants under high NH4+ conditions. Transcriptional regulation of nitrogen metabolism genes is essential for NH4+ homeostasis through uptake, transport, and assimilation processes in M. aquaticum.
