Multiscale modeling of the mechanical behavior of 3D braided CFRP composites under uniaxial tension

Yutong Liu et al.

Summary: An innovative multiscale modeling approach is developed to study the mechanical behavior of 3D braided CFRP composites under uniaxial tension. The approach includes microscale and mesoscale modeling, as well as a local homogenization approach. The predicted results of the multiscale model agree well with experimental measurements, validating the reliability of the approach. The damage mechanisms of 3D braided composites are investigated via multiscale modeling and SEM observations, revealing the dominant failure modes.

Behaviors of Composite Laminates Under Low-Energy Impact Using a Novel Analytical Framework

Xuecheng Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a mechanical behavior analysis framework for composite laminates under low-energy impact load is established using the micromechanics of failure theory and the mixed mode exponential cohesive zone model. The impact responses and failure modes of composite laminates are predicted using finite element modeling. The results show that the tensile failure of matrix and interlaminar shear delamination failure are the main failure modes. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical analysis, validating the effectiveness and accuracy of the constructed analysis method.

An innovative micromechanics-based multiscale damage model of 3D woven composites incorporating probabilistic fiber strength distribution

Tao Zheng et al.

Summary: An innovative micromechanics-based multiscale damage model is proposed for investigating the complex failure behaviors of 3D woven composites. The model defines the fiber arrangements and yarn architecture of realistic composites, and identifies damage initiations and governs damage evolutions using micromechanics of failure criteria. The effects of loading direction and fiber strength distributions on the stress distributions and performance of woven composites are studied. The numerical predictions exhibit good correlation with experiments.

A novel synergistic multi-scale modeling framework to predict micro- and meso-scale damage behaviors of 2D triaxially braided composite

Hongyong Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel synergistic multi-scale modeling framework is proposed to predict damage behaviors of 2D-triaxially braided composites, incorporating micro- and meso-scale coupling. The model considers internal stress and micro damage of constituent materials coupled with the stress and damage of tow, with initial effective elastic properties estimated by micro-mechanics models. The framework successfully predicts macro properties and damage modes of 2DTBC, revealing significant effects of micro fiber and matrix damage accumulations on the meso-scale damage of tows.

Meso-scale modeling and damage analysis of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composite under in-plane tension and compression loadings

Guowei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties and damage behaviors of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composite under in-plane tension and compression using experiment and simulation. Different material constitutive laws are established for the three components, showing significantly different mechanical properties and damage evolutions based on loading conditions and initial geometry characteristics. The study reveals that a non-linear stress-strain curve with clear transition region and intensive damage in tension, while a quasi-linear behavior up to facture is observed in compression with little damage prior to final fracture.

Experimental investigation on the effects of fabric architectures on mechanical and damage behaviors of carbon/epoxy woven composites

Guowei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical behaviors and damage evolutions of carbon/epoxy woven fabric composites with different geometries under tensile loading. It is found that the crimp ratio is a critical factor governing mechanical properties, with composites having smaller crimp ratios showing quasi-linear stress-strain curves with higher elastic modulus and strength. The study also reveals that regardless of fabric pattern, the elastic modulus, strength, and damage initiation are linearly correlated with the crimp ratio.
