Mismanagement of Plastic Waste through Open Burning with Emphasis on the Global South: A Systematic Review of Risks to Occupational and Public Health

Costas A. Velis et al.

Summary: Large quantities of mismanaged plastic waste pose a threat to the health and well-being of billions worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Burning discarded plastic in open fires, a self-management strategy adopted by 2 billion people, releases chemical substances and particles that may pose serious risks to public health and the environment. Research on the potential harm of open burning emissions remains underexplored, with waste pickers being identified as a high-risk group exposed to harmful substances.

Summary: The light-absorptivity of organic aerosol may have a significant impact on visibility and climate forcing. Studies have shown that organic carbon absorption is higher in winter compared to summer, potentially due to climatic conditions and anthropogenic emissions.

Commodity plastic burning as a source of inhaled toxic aerosols

Di Wu et al.

Summary: The aerosols emitted from unregulated burning of plastic waste have higher emission factors and toxicities, mainly attributed to carbonaceous aerosols containing persistent organic pollutants. Approximately 70.2 million tons of plastic waste was burned without regulation worldwide in 2016, leading to the release of a significant amount of toxic aerosols into the air, mostly in developing regions.
