Hongwei Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of photo-irradiation on the binding characteristics of Hg(II) with DOM, revealing that the order of Hg(II) binding onto HA was not affected by photo-irradiation, but UV irradiation did change the structure and binding ability of HA. UV irradiation showed a more significant impact on Hg(II)-HA complexes compared to solar irradiation, enhancing the reactivity of aromatic groups in HA.

Investigation of the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) onto natural-aged microplastics as affected by salt ions

Si Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) on natural-aged and virgin microplastics in different electrolyte solutions. The results showed that natural-aged microplastics had higher adsorption capacity for Pb(II) compared to virgin ones, and the addition of CaCl2 strongly inhibited the adsorption amount of Pb(II). The adsorption kinetics of Pb(II) were better fitted by the pseudo-second order model and Elovich equation and were slowed down greatly at higher ionic strength. The adsorption isotherm of Pb(II) onto microplastics affected by salt ions can be well described by Freundlich model, suggesting a multilayer and heterogeneous adsorption process. pH and fulvic acid in the electrolyte solutions significantly influenced the adsorption of Pb(II) due to changes in electrostatic interactions. Higher pH and ionic strength in different environmental water dramatically decreased the adsorption capacity onto microplastics. The adsorption mechanisms affected by salt ions mainly involve electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and ionic exchange.

Effects of humic acid on Pb2+ adsorption onto polystyrene microplastics from spectroscopic analysis and site energy distribution analysis

Xiaotian Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption of Pb2+ on PSMPs and the influence of HA on the adsorption process using PSMPs as model MPs. The results showed that HA promoted the adsorption of Pb2+ on PSMPs, and increasing HA concentration resulted in higher adsorption of Pb2+. The adsorption capacity of PSMPs for Pb2+ increased with increasing pH value and decreasing ionic strength. Analysis using SEM-EDS, FT-IR, and XPS confirmed that Pb2+ could be directly adsorbed onto PSMPs and also indirectly through HA. The study also found that HA acted as a bridging role in the adsorption process, enhancing the adsorption affinity of PSMPs through introduction of more adsorption sites. This study provides new insights into the adsorption behavior and mechanism of MPs for Pb2+ in aquatic environments.

Adsorption of lead(II) onto PE microplastics as a function of particle size: Influencing factors and adsorption mechanism

Thanh-Binh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study examined the adsorption of Pb ions on high-density polyethylene microplastics. It found that the smallest microplastics had the highest adsorption capacity and the mechanism of adsorption was chemical adsorption, specifically hydrogen bonding and surface complexation. The adsorption rate was rapid and the maximum adsorption capacity was observed at pH 5. Humic acid enhanced adsorption while fulvic acid had the opposite effect. This study suggests that polyethylene microplastics may pose risks to the environment and public health as carriers of heavy metals.

Summary: This article investigates the formation and abundance of microplastics during mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) and highlights the significant impact of mechanical pre-treatment and aerobic treatment on microplastics formation. It also suggests a relationship between microplastics abundance in ready organic output and the plastic content of the incoming waste. To reduce microplastics formation and emission by MBT, the organic fraction of MSW should be collected and treated separately.

Complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and dissolved organic matter in combined sewer overflows: Implications for the removal of heavy metals by enhanced coagulation

Zhen-liang Liao et al.

Summary: Enhanced coagulation is widely used to remove heavy metal ions from combined sewer overflows (CSOs), but faces challenges in removing HMs bound to DOM components with small molecular weight. This study explores the MW-based complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and CSO-DOM components, showing that Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM are mainly distributed in the MW range of <5 kDa, making them difficult to remove via coagulation. The study also highlights the impact of concentration effect and molecular composition on the MW distribution of Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM, with humic-like components showing high binding stability and capacity with Cu(II) ions.
