On the weakening association between South Asian Monsoon and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

N. Sandeep et al.

Summary: The long-term variability of the South Asian Summer Monsoon (SASM) is known to be associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), but recent decades have seen a weakening of this relationship. The warming of the Indian Ocean and the weakening of the North Atlantic Subtropical High (NASH) are identified as factors contributing to the weakening association between AMO and SASM. This has implications for understanding future changes in SASM in a warming world.

Higher sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean during the Last Interglacial weakened the South Asian monsoon

Yiming Wang et al.

Summary: Addressing and anticipating future South Asian monsoon changes is crucial for the food security and socioeconomic well-being of a quarter of the world's population. However, climate model projections show discrepancies in monsoon variability, and our understanding of the monsoon response to warm climate change scenarios is limited. This study compares Indian summer monsoon variability during different interglacial periods and highlights the importance of both solar insolation and internal climatic feedbacks in driving monsoon intensity.

Predictability of South-Asian monsoon rainfall beyond the legacy of Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere program (TOGA)

Summary: This study establishes the causality between North-Atlantic sea-surface temperature (NA-SST) and Indian summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) using two different nonlinear causal inference techniques. The results show that NA-SST and El Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are two independent drivers of ISMR, with NA-SST contributing as much to ISMR variability as ENSO. Observations and climate model simulations support the causality between NA-SST and ISMR through a Rossby wave-train mechanism.

Summary: Research mainly focuses on the variability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall, its influencing factors, and the correlation with tropical oceans. Studies in recent decades have primarily explored the impacts of El Nino events and the Indian Ocean Dipole on the variability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall.

Understanding the combined effects of global warming and anthropogenic aerosol forcing on the South Asian monsoon

Summary: The study found that greenhouse gases and anthropogenic aerosols have different impacts on monsoon precipitation, with aerosols enhancing surface radiation deficit, stabilizing the lower troposphere, leading to a slowdown in monsoonal winds and reduced precipitation.

Interdecadal modulation of interannual ENSO-Indian summer monsoon rainfall teleconnections in observations and CMIP6 models: Regional patterns

Nimmakanti Mahendra et al.

Summary: The study examined the inter-decadal modulations of inter-annual ENSO-ISM rainfall regional teleconnection patterns in observations and CMIP6 models. The relationship between ENSO and all-India summer rainfall showed strong epochal changes, with varying teleconnection strengths in different epochs. Regional rainfall responses, including anomalous upward motion and low-level cyclonic circulation patterns, were found to influence the epochal changes in ENSO-ISM rainfall teleconnections over India. The CMIP6 models differed in their representations of these epochal changes, with approximately 35% of models accurately simulating the teleconnections.

Observed Trends in the South Asian Monsoon Low-Pressure Systems and Rainfall Extremes Since the Late 1970s

Yujia You et al.

Summary: Since 1979, there has been a positive trend in extreme rainfall in south-central India and a negative trend in north-central India. This trend in extreme rainfall aligns with the trend in the number of Indian monsoon low-pressure systems passing through these regions. The changing path of LPSs is likely associated with a wetter environment due to a strengthened cross-equatorial moisture transport.

Restored relationship between ENSO and Indian summer monsoon rainfall around 1999/2000

Xianke Yang et al.

Summary: It was found that since 1999/2000, there has been a clear restoration of the relationship between ENSO and ISMR, closely linked to the interdecadal transition of ENSO evolution and sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical Atlantic. This finding should be considered in efforts to improve ISMR prediction.
