Wavelength-Orthogonal Stiffening of Hydrogel Networks with Visible Light

Vinh X. Truong et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a wavelength-orthogonal crosslinking method for hydrogel networks using two red-shifted chromophores. The photoreactivity of one chromophore is pH-dependent, and by incorporating a suitable photoacid generator, the activation wavelength of the other chromophore can be selectively controlled. This system was successfully applied to the design of hydrogels with independently tunable stiffness using green or blue light.

Inactivation of Competitive Decay Channels Leads to Enhanced Coumarin Photochemistry

Robin Klimek et al.

Summary: In this work, new coumarin-based photocages were designed using knowledge of fluorophore optimization. The photolysis efficiency was selectively modulated by inactivating competitive decay channels, and the underlying solvent-dependent photophysical dynamics were studied. These photocages exhibit superior photochemical properties and have great potential in applications due to their simple synthesis.

Photoreaction of 4-(Bromomethyl)-7-(diethylamino)coumarin:Generation of a Radical and Cation Triplet Diradical during the C-BrBond Cleavage

Ma-aya Takano et al.

Summary: In this study, the photolysis of DEACM-Br was investigated and the main reaction pathway was found to be the generation of radical D through homolytic C-Br bond cleavage. Interestingly, products derived from the triplet state of the carbocation intermediate (C-T) were identified, confirming the existence of C-T for the first time.

Strategy for Engineering High Photolysis Efficiency of Photocleavable Protecting Groups through Cation Stabilization

Albert M. Schulte et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel approach to significantly increase the photolysis quantum yield (QY) of heterolytic PPGs by stabilizing an intermediate chromophore cation. This strategy is applicable to different photolysis payloads and even different classes of PPGs, providing valuable insights into the factors determining photolysis efficiency.

Green light enabled Staudinger-Bertozzi ligation

Kubra Kalayci et al.

Summary: We introduce a visible light-induced Staudinger-Bertozzi ligation by combining a photolabile coumarin derivative with a triphenylphosphine moiety. Our study reveals that the uncaging process and Staudinger reaction can be triggered by green light (λ < 550 nm). We demonstrate the applicability of our approach in materials science through endgroup modification of water soluble poly(ethylene glycol) and green light-induced patterning of a solid substrate.

Photoclick Chemistry: A Bright Idea

Benjamin D. Fairbanks et al.

Summary: Photoclick chemistry involves a collection of click reactions performed with the application of light, offering spatiotemporal control, high selectivity, and excellent product yields. Different photoclick reactions have their own advantages and disadvantages, and a broader understanding of their physical and chemical characteristics is essential for realizing the full potential of this chemistry.

Wavelength-Selective Uncaging of Two Different Photoresponsive Groups on One Effector Molecule for Light-Controlled Activation and Deactivation

Isam Elamri et al.

Summary: PPGs are essential in biochemical studies for controlled release of effector molecules. The new TPOM method allows for both release and suppression of effector molecules through orthogonal photolysis of two PPGs. This strategy provides a precise and valuable tool for regulating biological processes with light.
