Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Anthony D. Bai et al.

Summary: The mortality rate of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia has decreased over the past three decades, but one in four patients still die within three months. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection is associated with a higher mortality rate, while more recent time periods have shown lower mortality rates.

The benefits and safety of oral sequential antibiotic therapy in non-complicated and complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia

M. Teresa Perez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: In this study, oral sequential therapy (OST) was compared with completely intravenous therapy (CIT) for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB). The results showed that OST could be a safe therapeutic option for properly selected patients, reducing the duration of therapy and hospital stay compared to CIT, with no differences in the 90-day recurrence rate between the two groups.

Intravenous to Oral Switch in Complicated Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia Without Endovascular Infection: A Retrospective Single-Center Cohort Study

Ilse J. E. Kouijzer et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that patients with disseminated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, who did not have endovascular infection on echocardiography and F-18-FDG-PET/CT, were successfully treated without relapse after IV-oral switch. The mortality rate was low and comparable to those who received prolonged intravenous treatment, and IV-oral switch was associated with a shorter hospital stay.

Effectiveness of early switching from intravenous to oral antibiotic therapy in Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic bone and joint or orthopedic metalware-associated infections

Helene Bocle et al.

Summary: The study compared the effect of early and late intravenous-to-oral antibiotic switch on treatment failure in Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic bone and joint infection, with results showing that early oral switch can reduce the treatment failure rate. Infections with methicillin-resistant S. aureus, obesity, and non-conventional empiric antibiotic therapy were significantly associated with treatment failure.
