Contrasting impacts of net cloud radiative forcing on the surface temperature trends in India

Ayan Kumar Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study proposes an analytical framework to estimate the impact of cloud radiative forcing trend on surface temperature trend in India. The satellite observations show varying cloud sensitivity and net cloud radiative forcing across different regions, which result in different seasonal temperature trends.

Identification of Convective and Stratiform Clouds Based on the Improved DBSCAN Clustering Algorithm

Yuanyuan Zuo et al.

Summary: A convective and stratiform cloud classification method for weather radar is proposed based on the DBSCAN algorithm, with 2D and 3D models used to identify different types of cloud clusters. The improved algorithm can intuitively distinguish core and boundary areas, aiding in the prediction of convective weather changes.

Machine learning-based retrieval of day and night cloud macrophysical parameters over East Asia using Himawari-8 data

Yikun Yang et al.

Summary: This study corrects the parallax error between CALIPSO and Himawari-8 data using a parallax correction algorithm based on cloud parameters extracted from the CALIOP cloud property product. A cloud property retrieval model based on the XGBoost machine learning algorithm is developed for the Himawari-8 satellite, achieving unified cloud mask, CTT, and CTH retrieval for both daytime and nighttime with high spatial and temporal resolutions. The ML algorithm shows higher accuracy in cloud detection, CTH, and CTT retrieval compared to existing cloud property products, especially at night.

Cloud macrophysical characteristics in China mainland and east coast from 2006 to 2017 using satellite active remote sensing observations

Yulei Chi et al.

Summary: This study uses the CloudSat and CALIPSO active remote sensing dataset to investigate the spatial, temporal, and vertical distribution of cloud macrophysical characteristics in six study areas over China mainland and east coast. The results show significant regional, seasonal, and zonal variations in cloud top height, cloud base height, and cloud cover. The study also finds that cloud spacing is greater in the ocean area than in the land area and greater in the low-latitude area than in the high-latitude area. The occurrence frequency of different cloud types varies, with high cloud being the most frequent and deep convective cloud the least frequent.

Uncertainty quantification in land surface temperature retrieved from Himawari-8/AHI data by operational algorithms

Yuhei Yamamoto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the uncertainties of land surface temperatures (LSTs) retrieved by three operational algorithms from Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data. The results showed that the YAM algorithm had the highest accuracy, while the WAN algorithm had the highest robustness to input errors.

Full-Tracking Algorithm for Convective Thunderstorm System From Initiation to Complete Dissipation

Jianhua Yin et al.

Summary: Accurately tracking the components of deep convective systems (DCSs) is crucial for understanding their impact on radiative forcing. This study develops a new algorithm that successfully tracks DCSs and integrates their related components. Results show that a majority of tracked DCSs experience splitting evolutions, and tracking cirrus allows for an extended lifetime and enlarged area of DCSs. Long-lived DCSs have lower cloud top temperature, greater rainfall, and larger area, with more frequent splitting evolutions.

The semi-diurnal cycle of deep convective systems over Eastern China and its surrounding seas in summer based on an automatic tracking algorithm

Wenwen Li et al.

Summary: The study found that small and medium-sized deep convective systems in Eastern China and its surrounding seas tend to occur most frequently in the afternoon, associated with local thermal instability and sea breeze circulation. On the other hand, large deep convective systems tend to initiate at night over inland China and surrounding seas, with enhanced transport of warm and moist air by strong large-scale prevailing southerly or southwesterly winds.

Climatology of Cloud Phase, Cloud Radiative Effects and Precipitation Properties over the Tibetan Plateau

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically quantifies the radiative contribution of cloud phases and precipitation over the Tibet Plateau using data from CloudSat. Statistical results show that ice clouds are more frequent during the cold season, mixed-phase clouds dominate the warm season, and supercooled water clouds have a larger distribution during the warm season in the eastern part of the TP.

Multi-Source Data Based Investigation of Aerosol-Cloud Interaction Over the North China Plain and North of the Yangtze Plain

Yikun Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates aerosol-cloud interactions over the North China Plain and north of the Yangtze Plain, finding that aerosol characteristics, atmospheric conditions, and drizzle all have impacts on cloud effective radius. Results show that the aerosol first indirect effect is negative for most cases when considering all clouds, but positive when only considering clouds without drizzle.

Potential impact of aerosols on convective clouds revealed by Himawari-8 observations over different terrain types in eastern China

Tianmeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of aerosols on convective clouds and finds that aerosol loading can influence the occurrence of convective clouds, while topography and diurnal meteorological variations may affect the strength of aerosol effects. The research also highlights the preferential occurrence of convective clouds under polluted conditions in the morning, which reverses in the afternoon.
