Advanced Soft Robotic System for In Situ 3D Bioprinting and Endoscopic Surgery

Mai Thanh Thai et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of tissue and organ damage by allowing in situ bioprinting inside a living body. This study presents a multifunctional and flexible in situ 3D bioprinter (F3DB) that can deliver multilayered biomaterials to internal organs/tissues using a high degree of freedom soft printing head integrated into a flexible robotic arm. The device has been tested for its 3D printing capabilities with different patterns, surfaces, and on a colon phantom, as well as its ability to perform endoscopic surgery on fresh porcine tissue.

Development of a soft robotic catheter for vascular intervention surgery

Chi Cong Nguyen et al.

Summary: Soft robotics-based teleoperated robotic catheter systems have the potential to enhance the safety and effectiveness of vascular interventional surgery. However, current cable-driven systems have limitations in stability, force sensing, and working in dynamic cardiothoracic environments. This study introduces a miniaturized soft robotic catheter (MSRC) with a flexible manipulator, variable stiffness stabilizing mechanism (VSSM), and soft force sensor. The MSRC utilizes soft artificial muscles and has an omnidirectional and extendable workspace, generating a force of 0.375 N. The VSSM enhances catheter stability and can withstand compressed forces. The feasibility of performing cardiac ablation is demonstrated, providing a reliable tool for atrial fibrillation treatment.

Hydraulically Steerable Micro Guidewire Capable of Distal Sharp Steering

Seunggyu Kang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a hydraulically steerable guidewire with a 400µm diameter, which can access 1mm diameter vessels with branching angles larger than 90 degrees. The steering mechanism consists of a flexible eccentric tube that can bend in two different curvatures and access small diameter vessels even when confined inside narrow vessels. The guidewire fabrication uses a template and only biocompatible materials are utilized.
