Enhanced Electrochemical Properties and Optimized Li+ Transmission Pathways of PEO/LLZTO-Based Composite Electrolytes Modified by Supramolecular Combination

Zhengyi Lu et al.

Summary: Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are improved by coating LLZTO fillers with a functional supramolecular combination (CD-TFSI). This coating allows for homogeneous dispersion and tight interface contact, resulting in enhanced conductivity, increased Li+ transference number, and extended electrochemical stability window. Practical application of the CPEs is demonstrated in both full cells and pouch cells. This work presents a new strategy for optimizing PEO/LLZTO CPEs for solid lithium batteries.

The quest for the holy grail of solid-state lithium batteries

Patrick Bonnick et al.

Summary: Over the past 15 years, significant advancements in the Li+ conductivity of inorganic solid electrolytes have rekindled interest in solid state batteries, specifically with the aim of realizing the lithium metal anode. However, the problem of lithium dendrite penetration through solid electrolytes still persists. Recent research suggests that the low self-diffusion rate of Li-0, along with lithium plating/stripping hot spots, is the primary cause of lithium penetration. Various approaches have been attempted to mitigate this issue. Additionally, solid-state cathodes face challenges related to crack formation due to the expansion and contraction of the active material. Soft electrolytes, such as composite electrolytes, may offer some relief. This article explores the challenges faced by solid state cells, the attempted solutions, and the most promising paths towards success.

Decomposition of Trace Li2CO3 During Charging Leads to Cathode Interface Degradation with the Solid Electrolyte LLZO

Alexander A. Delluva et al.

Summary: The presence of trace amounts of Li2CO3 remnants in solid-state batteries can decompose at high charging potentials, leading to the degradation of the electrolyte-cathode interface. Gas evolution of CO2 and O2 emanating from the electrolyte-cathode interface was monitored using operando electrochemical mass spectrometry, which correlated with a significant increase in cathode interfacial resistance. This study provides the first evidence of electrochemical decomposition of interfacial Li2CO3 in garnet cells and highlights the importance of reporting time-to-assembly for cell preparation methods.

Strategies towards enabling lithium metal in batteries: interphases and electrodes

Birger Horstmann et al.

Summary: Despite the approaching performance limits of lithium-ion intercalation batteries, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies, with a focus on the use of lithium metal anode. However, the poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode in liquid electrolytes present challenges for reversible cycling. Experimental and theoretical insights are being used to explore pathways for stable cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal and improvements in understanding lithium metal nucleation and deposition on the nanoscale. Recent advances in electrolytes and SEI design show potential for stable cycling and mitigation of morphological instabilities.
