Wenpan Xu et al.

Summary: Nowadays, the development of renewable energy has become a global consensus. However, the intermittent and volatile nature of renewable electricity presents challenges to grid stability. Liquid carbon dioxide energy storage is recognized as a promising technology to address these difficulties. This paper proposes a liquid carbon dioxide energy storage system integrated with a low-grade heat source, and investigates system design and performance under both design and off-design conditions.

Performance analysis and selective emitter design for an efficient concentrated solar thermophotovoltaic system based on cavity-structured absorber and high-bandgap cell

Jialu Tian et al.

Summary: In order to overcome the efficiency limitation of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells, this study proposes a concentrated solar thermophotovoltaic (STPV) system based on a cavity-structured absorber, which can reshape the solar spectrum to match PV cells. An energy-balance model is established to analyze system performance, and the results show that the theoretical power generation efficiency of the system can reach 52.25% when using an ideal selective emitter to match high-bandgap Si cells. Furthermore, a metamaterial selective emitter is designed for the first time, and the simulation method is verified by comparison with previous studies. The results indicate that using a cavity-structured absorber and metamaterial selective emitter with high-bandgap PV cells is an effective STPV conversion path with advantages of simplicity and high theoretical efficiency.

A novel selective thermophotovoltaic emitter based on multipole resonances

T. C. Huang et al.

Summary: Thermophotovoltaic systems can increase energy conversion efficiency by utilizing a two-dimensional nanodisks/thin-film metamaterial as a wavelength-selective emitter. The proposed emitter achieves high emittance peaks through electric dipole and anapole modes in silicon nanodisks, and can be tailored easily due to non-dispersive optical constants. Additionally, the coupling between multipole resonances and the bottom tungsten layer induces a magnetic dipolar resonance, leading to sensitive wavelengths and higher emittance.

Design and evaluation of a hybrid solar thermphotovoltaic-thermoelectric system

Dianhong Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid solar thermophotovoltaic-thermoelectric (STPV-TE) system to improve the efficiency of a solar thermophotovoltaic (STPV) system by utilizing high-temperature thermal radiation. The non-contact installation method between the thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell and thermoelectric (TE) module eliminates temperature interaction and a theoretical model and analysis method for the hybrid STPV-TE system are established. Experimental results show that the STPV-TE system promotes the efficiency of the STPV system.

Optimization of Thermophotovoltaic Power System With a Spectrally Controlled Multi-Concentric Emitter

Ali Hussain Kazim et al.

Summary: Thermophotovoltaic energy conversion is a solid-state technique that converts thermal energy into electricity using infrared light. The current efficiency is still low, but researchers have proposed using molten metal storage and concentrated solar power, as well as reflectors and spectral filters, to improve the system efficiency. The improved model achieved higher conversion efficiency and provides a cheap and efficient alternative for large-scale concentrated solar power facilities.

Sustaining efficiency at elevated power densities in InGaAs airbridge thermophotovoltaic cells

Bosun Roy-Layinde et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that although the thermophotovoltaic efficiency of thin-film InGaAs cells is record-high, the power density of devices remains low. Effective heat and charge carrier management is necessary to increase power densities. This study investigates the use of single-junction InGaAs air bridge cells (ABCs) under such conditions and develops a predictive device model based on experimental characterization. The model identifies opportunities for improving performance and maximizes overall power output by designing a thermal management strategy. The results show that an InGaAs ABC with high material quality can achieve peak efficiencies of -41% at 0.5 W/cm2, with efficiencies above 36% sustained up to 1.5 W/cm2 after considering the power required for cooling the cells.

Behaviors of photovoltaic cells illuminated by a laser of different operation modes

Rui-Ting Chang et al.

Summary: The ultimate capability of light-electricity conversion of a laser with different operation modes in a typical photovoltaic (PV) cell was investigated for the technologic concept of laser power transmission (LPT). The quasi-linear correlation between the maximum allowable laser power density and the pulsed laser power percentage (PPP) of the combined dual lasers was found experimentally on a tri-junction GaAs PV cell. At the same time, the patterns of thermomechanical damage in the PV cells were characterized. The physical mechanism on the difference in the light-electricity conversion ability for a multi-pulse (MP) laser and a continuous wave (CW) laser was revealed by the coupled model on thermal diffusion and the carrier transport.
