Design and characterization of a smart fabric sensor to recognize human intention for robotic applications

Giovanni Mariani et al.

Summary: Human intention recognition is a challenge in designing wearable exoskeletons. Conductive smart fabrics can overcome the limitations of biosignal analysis. This study designs and characterizes a sensor based on smart fabrics for upper limb exoskeletons. The sensor shows good linearity, repeatability, and response time, confirming the possibility of using smart fabrics for human intention recognition.

Biomechanical Assessment of Adapting Trajectory and Human-Robot Interaction Stiffness in Impedance-Controlled Ankle Orthosis

Joao M. Lopes et al.

Summary: This study proposes an adaptive impedance control strategy for effective gait rehabilitation by adjusting stiffness and trajectory, showing enhanced muscular activation in healthy volunteers. The strategy guides users towards healthy gait patterns while allowing deviations, and could be applied for intensity-adapted gait training with different human-robot compliant levels.

Review of control strategies for lower-limb exoskeletons to assist gait

Romain Baud et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and classifies control strategies of lower-limb exoskeletons, separating into high, middle, and low levels. 291 references have been considered, with high-level methods including manual user input, brain interfaces, and automatic mode detection. Mid-level synchronization is often based on manual triggers, discrete events, or continuous estimations, while low-level actions are carried out using position or torque controllers.
