Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Assessment of Radiofrequency Ablation for Papillary Microcarcinoma of the Thyroid A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Sam P. J. van Dijk et al.

Summary: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been investigated as an alternative treatment for low-risk papillary microcarcinomas of the thyroid (mPTCs). This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that RFA is a safe and efficient method to treat selected low-risk mPTCs.

Repeat thyroid FNAC: Inter-observer agreement among high- and low-volume centers in Naples metropolitan area and correlation with the EU-TIRADS

Summary: This study examined the inter-observer agreement between high-volume and low-volume institutions in thyroid cytology and explored the distribution of discordant FNAC reports in the European Thyroid Imaging and Reporting Data System (EU-TIRADS) categories. The study found significant differences in FNAC reports between the high-volume and low-volume institutions, and poor inter-observer agreement.

Current practice in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer

Martin Schlumberger et al.

Summary: Considerable changes have occurred in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) over the past four decades, with improved diagnostic tools and prognostic classifications available. Low-risk patients make up the majority with good outcomes, while high-risk patients require more aggressive treatment and follow-up due to frequent recurrences.

Global patterns and trends in incidence and mortality of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents: a population-based study

Salvatore Vaccarella et al.

Summary: Thyroid cancer incidence rates in children and adolescents globally show fluctuating patterns, with higher rates in females than males and increasing with age in both sexes. Rapid increases in incidence have been observed in almost all countries over the past decade, with a strong correlation between incidence rates in children and adolescents and adults.

Summary: The study found that in Middle Eastern PTC, m-ETE is significantly associated with compromised survival and acts as an independent predictor of RFS. Additionally, the prognostic performance of the new AJCC 8th edition staging system was inferior to the 7th edition.

Ultrasound-Guided Radiofrequency Ablation Versus Thyroid Lobectomy for Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Study of 884 Patients

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) versus thyroid lobectomy (TL) for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and found comparable results in a four-year follow-up period. RFA, as a minimally invasive modality, may be a promising alternative treatment option for low-risk PTMC patients.

Long-Term Efficacy of Ultrasound-Guided Laser Ablation for Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: Results of a 10-Year Retrospective Study

Ho Jin Kim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the 10-year efficacy and safety of laser ablation (LA) for the treatment of solitary papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). The results showed that LA was well tolerated by patients, with a disappearance rate of 100% in ablation areas after 12 months. Thyroid hormone and autoantibody levels did not significantly change post-treatment, and the majority of patients did not experience recurrence. For those with recurrence, surgery was performed successfully.

Predictive Value of Serum Thyroglobulin for Structural Recurrence Following Lobectomy for Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Siyuan Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that postlobectomy serum thyroglobulin/antithyroglobulin values can be used to predict recurrence in papillary thyroid carcinoma, while also determining optimal cutoff values for first and last thyroglobulin measurements. Patients with elevated thyroglobulin levels have an increased risk of recurrence, and these thresholds can help identify high-risk patients during follow-up.

Summary: With the increasing detection of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMCs) and relapsing cervical differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) metastases, active surveillance (AS) and minimally invasive treatments (MITs) are being proposed as alternatives to surgery and radioiodine. In certain cases, a multidisciplinary team assessment is needed to appropriately select patients for MIT.
