Effects of Graphene on the Transport of Quinolones in Porous Media

Zhou Cheng et al.

Summary: The effect of graphene on the transport of CIP and NOR in porous media was investigated using batch experiments, column experiments, and mathematical models. The results showed that graphene had high adsorption capacity for both antibiotic contaminants, with maximum adsorption amounts of 270.67 mg/g and 178.36 mg/g based on the Langmuir model calculation. Column experiments demonstrated that the mobility of CIP and NOR decreased with the mass fraction of graphene, but increased with flow velocity and Na+ concentration. The BDST mathematical model accurately predicted the transport processes, and a regression analysis provided relationships between kinetic parameters and graphene content, flow velocity, and ionic strength for predicting the mobility of CIP and NOR in porous media.

Combined Effects of Polyamide Microplastics and Hydrochemical Factors on the Transport of Bisphenol A in Groundwater

Zhou Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) on polyamide (PA) and the transport behavior of BPA in groundwater in the presence of PA. The surface of PA particles is significantly changed after the adsorption of BPA. The isothermal adsorption process of BPA can be described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, while the kinetic adsorption can be fitted by a quasi-first-order model. The results also show that the mass recovery rate of BPA decreases with PA content and increases with flow velocity, and the pH has a significant effect on the mass recovery rate.

Investigating transport kinetics of polystyrene nanoplastics in saturated porous media

Xinyao Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport kinetics of polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) in porous media and explores the effect of ion concentration on their mobility. Experiment and numerical model results show that PSNPs are easily adsorbed on the surface of the media when the concentration of Na+ increases, while the mobility of PSNPs is reduced. Similarly, an increase in Ca2+ concentration also decreases the mobility of PSNPs. The study further establishes a correlation between PSNPs mobility and DLVO energy barriers.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Summary: Microplastics are widely distributed in the Ganjiang River surface water, with fragments being the main shape. Bacterial communities on microplastics exhibit high diversity, and certain bacteria such as Flavobacterium, Rhodoferax, Pseudomonas, and Janthinobacterium are enriched compared to water and sediment.

Summary: This study focused on the temporal and spatial distribution of microplastics in freshwater environments at Lake Tollense, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It found significant spatial and temporal variations in microplastic concentrations in lakeshore sediments, while microplastic abundances in lakebed sediments showed no significant differences.

Uptake of microplastics by carrots in presence of As (III): Combined toxic effects

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: Current research shows that microplastics can enter carrot roots and leaves, with arsenic (As) increasing the amount of microplastics entering the carrot tissue and cells, leading to reduced quality of carrots. The presence of As exacerbates the effects of microplastics on carrots, posing greater health risks for consumers.
