Experimental investigation on organic Rankine flash cycle with high- and low-stage scroll-expanders for thermal power generation

Tailu Li et al.

Summary: Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is used for low-medium grade thermal power generation, but its performance is hampered by the sensible heat used for evaporation. This study proposes an organic Rankine flash cycle (ORFC) to reduce evaporation irreversible loss. Experimental results validate that ORFC has a 28.23% higher power output than ORC under the rated working condition. The increase in heat source temperature improves the matching between different processes and increases power output.

A contemporary description of the Carnot cycle featured by chemical work from equilibrium: The electrochemical Carnot cycle

Ruihua Chen et al.

Summary: The emerging electrochemical heat engines require a modern description of the Carnot cycle, which was previously described in terms of volume work. This study recognizes the risk of thermodynamic inconsistency caused by multiple relaxation times in the same process and proposes a rigorous description of the electrochemical Carnot cycle. By using an ideal mixture capable of phase transitions and chemical reactions, a one-to-one correspondence between equilibrium destruction and restoration is achieved in the electrochemical Carnot cycle, effectively avoiding interference from other relaxation times. The practical implementation of the electrochemical Carnot cycle can be accomplished using available heat exchangers and electrochemical cells with flow battery structures.

Summary: A performance comparison of EBC and TREC was conducted using KI/KI3 and K3Fe(CN)6/K4Fe(CN)6 solutions as electrolytes, based on an improved system configuration and a two-dimensional model coupling mass transfer and electrode kinetics. The results show that there is no significant difference in performance between EBC and TREC. The study also indicates that eliminating overpotentials can significantly improve their power density and exergy efficiency by approximately 50% and 40% respectively.

Exploring a novel route for low-grade heat harvesting: Electrochemical Brayton cycle

Ruihua Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes the electrochemical Brayton cycle (EBC) for power generation, which converts low-grade heat to power through flow batteries and heat exchangers. Models and analyses are conducted to evaluate the thermal efficiency, power density, isentropic efficiency, and entropy generation of the EBC system. The results show that the ideal EBC system can achieve a maximum power density of 690 W m-2 and a relative efficiency of 52.3% at temperatures between 25-75°C. The actual EBC system can reach a relative efficiency of 45.3% and a power density of 1.6 W m-2 with 70% heat regeneration at an electrolyte flow velocity of 0.01 mm s-1. Heat transfer, activation overpotential, and ohmic overpotential are identified as the main contributors to entropy generation. The high efficiency and integration potential with energy storage make EBC a feasible and promising technology.

Summary: In this study, a steady-stated, three-dimensional model is developed to study the flow and mass transfer in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) with serpentine flow field (SFF). The results show that increasing the flow rate can improve the efficiency of VRFB, but its performance is no longer sensitive to the flow rate when it exceeds a certain value. Furthermore, improving the structure of the serpentine flow field can alleviate the pressure drop issue in VRFB.

Continuous thermally regenerative electrochemical systems for directly converting low-grade heat to electricity

Xiaoya Li et al.

Summary: Thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle (TREC) system is a promising technology for low-grade heat recovery, achieving high energy conversion efficiency. This continuously operated system converts heat to electricity by alternately operating two electrochemical cells at different temperatures. With a copper hexacyanoferrate cathode and a Cu/Cu2+ anode, the system achieves an energy conversion efficiency of 1.76% (14.19% of Carnot efficiency) between 10 and 50 degrees C. Even at a low temperature difference of 10 degrees C vs room temperature, the efficiency is 0.98%. The proposed system allows flexibility in electrode material selection, improving the practicality of low-grade heat harvesting with TREC systems.
