Upgrading catalytic activity of NiO/CaO/MgO from natural limestone as catalysts for transesterification of coconut oil to biodiesel

Nuni Widiarti et al.

Summary: Limestone was converted to high surface area CaO/MgO catalysts using the CHD method, and the addition of surfactant PEG improved the performance of the catalysts. Optimization studies resulted in the highest biodiesel yield, and impregnation with 5% NiO further enhanced the esterification functionality of the catalysts.

The spillover effects of rising energy prices following 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

Michiyuki Yagi et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of rising energy prices caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine on other sectors. The results show that a 20% price increase exclusively in Russia's mining and quarrying sector has minimal global effect, but a 20% price increase in every sector globally leads to a 3.15% rise in global prices and significant damage to monthly GDP. Due to a five-month increase in oil prices, the world suffered around 2.85% of annual GDP loss, equivalent to a 5-fold price change in the Russian mining and quarrying sector alone.

Synthesis and characterization of calcium oxide nano particles obtained from biowaste and its combustion characteristics in a biodiesel operated compression ignition engine

J. Jayaprabakar et al.

Summary: The research aims to use calcination to produce nano calcium oxide (CaO) additives for fuel. Spectrum investigations confirmed the synthesis of nano particles using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The qualities of the fuel were evaluated based on ASTM criteria, and the combustion investigation in an engine found improved performance with CaO nano additives. The study concludes that micro CaO particles can potentially be used to enhance the combustion characteristics of engines powered by biodiesel blends.

Chitosan of blood cockle shell (Anadara granosa) as a natural coagulant for removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity of well-water

Eko Siswoyo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of blood clam shells as a natural coagulant to reduce TSS and turbidity in well-water. The results showed that the blood clam shell-based coagulant was effective in removing suspended solids and turbidity, and it has the potential to replace conventional chemical coagulants in water treatment systems.

Pre-treatment of used cooking oils for the production of green chemicals: A review

Juliana Cardenas et al.

Summary: The utilization of waste lipids in the production of higher value-added and green chemicals will be a common practice in the future to enhance the sustainability of the olechemical industry. Refining processes are necessary to obtain suitable oleochemical feedstocks due to the heterogeneous nature and impurities present in waste lipids. Various technologies for pre-treatment, purification, and refining of waste lipids have been reviewed in this work, with a focus on transforming used cooking oils into oleochemical raw materials.
