Physicochemical Characterization and Evaluation of the Cytotoxic Effect of Particulate Matter (PM10)

Damariz Marin-Palma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition, morphology, and potential health effects of PM10 collected from monitoring stations in the Valle de Aburra, Colombia. The PM10 particles in Valle de Aburra mainly consisted of ashes, volatiles, and fixed carbon, and contained various metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results suggest that the PM10 in Valle de Aburra is mainly derived from construction waste transport, coal combustion, and vehicle emissions, posing a potential health risk to the citizens.

PM10 promotes an inflammatory cytokine response that may impact SARS-CoV-2 replication in vitro

Damariz Marin-Palma et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a concern about the decrease in air quality mainly due to human activities. Air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM), have been associated with negative effects on human health, including worsening of respiratory diseases and infections. High levels of PM have been linked to increased morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 in certain regions. This study aims to evaluate the impact of coarse particulate matter (PM10) on the inflammatory response and viral replication triggered by SARS-CoV-2 using in vitro models.

Systematic review of preclinical studies on the neutrophil-mediated immune response to air pollutants, 1980-2020

Andres Valderrama et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the preclinical evidence on the neutrophil-mediated response to air pollutants. The findings revealed that research in this field has been scattered and heterogeneous. The study identified 100 different preclinical models, 10 pollutants, and 11 immunological outcomes related to neutrophil response to air pollutants. Mechanisms of neutrophils-mediated immunopathology include cellular activation, ROS production, and proinflammatory effects, leading to cell-death, oxidative stress, and inflammatory infiltrates in lungs.

Viral respiratory infections and air pollutants

Maria Camila Loaiza-Ceballos et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a global public health issue and a risk factor for cardiorespiratory diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can induce inflammatory responses and increase the risk of respiratory viral infections. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and guide decisions for controlling respiratory infections.

Particulate matter (PM10) induces in vitro activation of human neutrophils, and lung histopathological alterations in a mouse model

Andres Valderrama et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of exposure to particulate matter (PM10) on the neutrophil-mediated inflammatory response and found that PM10 induced cytotoxicity in neutrophils and increased the release of ROS, IL-8, MPO, NE, and NETs. Neutrophil infiltration and inflammatory responses were also observed in animal models. These results suggest that PM10 may activate neutrophils and contribute to lung inflammation, exacerbating respiratory pathologies.

Pollution and health: a progress update

Richard Fuller et al.

Summary: The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. Updated data from 2019 shows that pollution is still responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, with reductions in some types of pollution offset by increases in others. Despite efforts, little progress has been made in addressing pollution, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.

Identification of a PD-L1+Tim-1+iNKT subset that protects against fine particulate matter-induced airway inflammation

Christina Li-Ping Thio et al.

Summary: This study found that PM2.5 can induce airway hyperreactivity and neutrophilic inflammation, accompanied by increased Th1 and Th17 responses and epithelial cell apoptosis. γ8 T cells promote neutrophilic inflammation and AHR through IL-17A, while iNKT cells play a protective role by inhibiting γ8 T cell function through Tim-1 and PD-L1, preventing PM2.5-induced AHR and neutrophilia.

Transcriptional Response of Blood Mononuclear Cells from Patients with Inflammatory and Autoimmune Disorders Exposed to Krakow Smog

Summary: Despite the efforts to reduce air pollution in Poland, particularly in the city of Krakow, the level of pollutants remains high and poses a significant risk to human health. This study found that the particulate matter in the air of Krakow had adverse effects on the gene expression profile of blood cells, particularly in patients with AS and MS. The findings suggest a possible link between air pollution and the progression of these diseases in the residents of Krakow.

Investigation of PM2.5-induced carcinogenic effects through mediation of ErbB family based on DNA methylation and transcriptomics analysis by a lung-mimicking microfluidic platform

Lulu Zheng et al.

Summary: Exposure to fine particles can induce changes in DNA methylation and transcriptomics, leading to the activation of cancer-related signal transduction pathways. The alterations in the expression of ErbB family proteins caused by fine particle exposure are regulated by changes in the cellular DNA methylome.
