Life cycle assessment of plastic waste and energy recovery

Antonis Vlasopoulos et al.

Summary: Plastics are crucial to the economy and daily life, but plastic pollution is a global issue. The European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy, adopted in January 2018, aims to tackle this problem by promoting recyclability of plastic products by 2030. This study evaluates various plastic materials and technologies through a review of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analyses. The environmental impacts of different plastics in landfill disposal and incineration with energy recovery were analyzed and compared, highlighting the potential for energy recovery.

Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of mixed plastic waste gasification for production of methanol and hydrogen

Shaik Afzal et al.

Summary: Plastic waste management is a global concern due to its accumulation in landfills and the natural environment. Gasification can convert mixed plastic waste into valuable products such as methanol and hydrogen. This study conducted a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of gasification pathways for mixed plastic waste. The results showed that the cost, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions of these pathways are influenced by factors such as syngas yield and waste plastic feedstock price.

Catalytic tandem dehydrochlorination-hydrogenation of PVC towards valorisation of chlorinated plastic waste

Galahad O'Rourke et al.

Summary: A solvent-based tandem dehydrochlorination-hydrogenation process is proposed to efficiently convert PVC to a saturated polymer, addressing the issue of insoluble conjugated polymers formed during high-temperature PVC treatment. The process achieves high dechlorination and produces products with tunable double bond content and high degrees of dechlorination. The chemical structures of the products are accurately monitored by liquid H-1-NMR method, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the stabilization of Rh catalyst species by ionic liquid during the tandem process.

Catalytic upcycling of PVC waste-derived phthalate esters into safe, hydrogenated plasticizers

Simon Windels et al.

Summary: The upcycling of harmful phthalate esters extracted from PVC waste into safer plasticizers through catalytic one-pot (trans)esterification-hydrogenation process was reported. Challenges arose when applying the reaction to PVC-extracted phthalates due to hydrogenolysis of benzyl phthalates and impurities in the extract, which were eventually resolved by coupling hydrogenation with in situ (trans)esterification and pretreating the extract with an activated carbon adsorbent.

Co-pyrolysis of biomass and polyvinyl chloride under microwave irradiation: Distribution of chlorine

Hejie Yu et al.

Summary: Co-pyrolysis of sophora wood and PVC effectively reduces chlorine emissions and promotes chlorine retention in char. Lignin has the most significant effects on reducing gas phase chlorine emission and achieving chlorine immobilization, with chlorine mainly existing in the form of sodium chloride in the char of lignin-PVC co-pyrolysis. Co-pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and PVC provides a practical pathway for utilization of PVC waste in an environmentally friendly manner, realizing efficient chlorine retention and significantly reducing chlorine-related emissions.

Sustainable Nanoporous Carbon Catalysts Derived from Melamine Assisted Cross-Linking of Poly(vinyl chloride) Waste for Acetylene Hydrochlorination

Shuhao Wei et al.

Summary: The conversion of waste plastics into high value carbon materials is crucial for sustainable development. In this study, sustainable nanoporous carbon catalysts (NPCs) with high catalytic performance were prepared by using waste poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as a carbon source through a solid grinding method with the assistance of melamine. The addition of melamine facilitated the dechloridation of PVC at room temperature and significantly increased the yield of carbon products. NPCs exhibited superior catalytic performance in acetylene hydrochlorination and the generated vinyl chloride (VCM) could be polymerized to produce PVC, achieving material recycling.
