Facilitating implementation of the one health approach: A definition of a one health intervention

Serge Nzietchueng et al.

Summary: The past two decades have seen a disruption in the global socio-economic, security, and political foundations caused by the increasing occurrence of health events at the interface of ecosystems, animals, and humans. The unprecedented magnitude of these events has led to the adoption of the One Health approach. Various theoretical definitions and an operational one have been released to facilitate understanding of this approach by the general public. In order to provide evidence of the impact of implementing the One Health approach and evaluate the process outputs, a definition and characteristics of a One Health intervention are necessary.

Current methods for the diagnosis of leptospirosis: Issues and challenges

Gillaine Vail Pinto et al.

Summary: Leptospirosis is a significant re-emerging anthropo-zoonotic disease caused by a pathogenic spirochete. It is prevalent in tropical/temperate regions with heavy rainfall and flooding. The disease often goes undiagnosed due to mild symptoms, leading to fatal outcomes. Limited diagnostic facilities and asymptomatic manifestations contribute to the neglect of this disease in tropical regions. The need for a rapid diagnostic test for immediate antibiotic therapy is highlighted.

Optimizing the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) panel for the diagnosis of Leptospirosis in a low resource, hyper-endemic setting with varied microgeographic variation in reactivity

Dinesha Jayasundara et al.

Summary: The microscopic agglutination test is commonly used for diagnosing leptospirosis, requiring an optimised panel that reacts well with patient samples. This study describes the process of selecting such an optimised panel for Sri Lanka, highlighting geographical variations in test results and recommending the use of ELISA with PCR for a more accurate diagnosis in countries with a higher disease burden.

Summary: The study showed that flood is a risk factor for leptospiral infection in livestock, with significantly higher seropositivity rates in livestock exposed to floodwaters.
