Suicide and self-harm

Duleeka Knipe et al.

Summary: Suicide and self-harm are major health and societal issues worldwide, with a higher burden observed in low-income and middle-income countries. The causes of these behaviors are multifactorial, influenced by factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, and geography. Clinical and public health interventions offer promise, but their effectiveness has mostly been studied in high-income countries. Predicting suicide is unlikely to be helpful, and intervention and prevention efforts should involve both clinical and community approaches, involving every healthcare professional.

Transgenerational concordance in parent-to-child transmission of suicidal behaviour: a retrospective, nationwide, register-based cohort study of 4 419 642 individuals in Denmark

Anne Ranning et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transmission of suicidal behavior from parents to children and finds that there is a transmission between them. Individuals exposed to parental suicide attempts are more likely to attempt suicide themselves, while individuals exposed to parental suicide are more likely to die by suicide. Preventive and family-oriented interventions are needed to mitigate the genetic risk.

Axonal marker neurofilament light predicts long-term outcomes and progressive neurodegeneration after traumatic brain injury

Neil S. N. Graham et al.

Summary: Plasma NfL serves as a sensitive and clinically meaningful measure of axonal injury resulting from TBI, validated through advanced MRI, cerebral microdialysis, and experimental models. The results support the incorporation of NfL sampling into clinical practice to aid in diagnosis and improve prognosis.

On the Genetic and Environmental Relationship Between Suicide Attempt and Death by Suicide

Alexis C. Edwards et al.

Summary: The study examined the genetic and environmental etiology of suicide attempts and deaths using Swedish national registry data, finding that there is partial overlap in genetic factors between the two, but also significant differences based on gender and age. These differences should be taken into account when developing prevention strategies and risk prediction algorithms.
