Bloom of a freshwater green alga Botryococcus braunii (Botryococcaceae, Trebouxiophyceae) and the associated mass fish mortality in a man-made lake, Sarawak, Malaysia

Sing Tung Teng et al.

Summary: The mass mortality of fish in a man-made lake at Kuching, Malaysia was found to be caused by the dominance of a green algal species Botryococcus sp. and its toxic oily substances, which resulted in patches of discoloration and oil layer on the water surface. This study provided the first report of Botryococcus braunii L race bloom associated with a fish kill event in a freshwater lake in Malaysia, confirming its harmful effects on the environment.

Common Presence of Phototrophic Gemmatimonadota in Temperate Freshwater Lakes

Izabela Mujakic et al.

Summary: Gemmatimonadota bacteria are widely distributed in natural environments, including soil and water bodies. Analysis of metagenomes from five freshwater lakes in central Europe revealed diverse Gemmatimonadota populations, some of which are closely associated with phytoplankton and possess unique mitochondrial assembly genes.

Tight Adherence (Tad) Pilus Genes Indicate Putative Niche Differentiation in Phytoplankton Bloom Associated Rhodobacterales

Ashley Isaac et al.

Summary: The interactions between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, especially the association of diatoms with Alphaproteobacteria of the order Rhodobacterales, play a crucial role in aquatic environments. While many members of Rhodobacterales compete during diatom blooms, only a subset form close associations with diatoms by colonizing their phycospheres. Members of Rhodobacterales are specialized in colonizing the microenvironment of diatom cells, known as the phycosphere, with different molecular mechanisms differentiating generalists and phycosphere colonizers.
