The Enigmatic Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) Species Complex: Phylogenetic Challenges and Opportunities From a Notoriously Tricky Mosquito Group

Matthew L. Aardema et al.

Summary: Our understanding of how natural selection and demographic processes produce and maintain biological diversity remains limited. However, new developments in high-throughput genomic sequencing offer opportunities for detailed analyses, such as in the mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex, which provide a unique system for studying speciation mechanisms and the impact of admixture on taxonomy.

The molecular epidemiology of multiple zoonotic origins of SARS-CoV-2

Jonathan E. Pekar et al.

Summary: Understanding the circumstances that lead to pandemics is crucial for their prevention. In this study, the genomic diversity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was analyzed. The results suggest that before February 2020, SARS-CoV-2 likely consisted of two distinct viral lineages, labeled A and B. Through phylodynamic rooting methods and epidemic simulations, it was revealed that these lineages were the result of at least two separate cross-species transmission events into humans. The findings indicate that widespread circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in humans before November 2019 is unlikely, and define the narrow time window between the first jump of SARS-CoV-2 into humans and the first reported cases of COVID-19.

Widespread phages of endosymbionts: Phage WO genomics and the proposed taxonomic classification of Symbioviridae

Sarah R. Bordenstein et al.

Summary: Bacterial endosymbionts, such as Wolbachia, have mobile genetic elements that can influence host biology. This study focused on the temperate phage WO, the largest of Wolbachia’s mobile elements. The researchers analyzed 150 Wolbachia genome sequences and identified patterns of phage distribution, variants, and putative functions. They also proposed a new taxonomic classification for phage WO. These findings provide insights into the evolutionary history and genetic diversity of endosymbiotic phages.

Genome sequencing and comparative analysis of Wolbachia strain wAlbA reveals Wolbachia-associated plasmids are common

Julien Martinez et al.

Summary: Wolbachia are widespread bacteria in arthropods that manipulate their host's reproduction through cytoplasmic incompatibility. Plasmids encoding cif genes, which induce cytoplasmic incompatibility, are commonly found in Wolbachia genomes. This study sequenced the complete genome of wAlbA, a Wolbachia strain, and found that it is associated with two new plasmids. The study also identified plasmids and chromosomal islands in over 20% of publicly available Wolbachia genome datasets, raising questions about their role in symbiosis.

Cytoplasmic Incompatibility Variations in Relation with Wolbachia cid Genes Divergence in Culex pipiens

Mathieu Sicard et al.

Summary: The study focuses on conditional sterility induced by Wolbachia endosymbionts in arthropods. It evaluated the penetrance variations of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) in Culex pipiens mosquitoes through the divergence of cid genes. The results show that while crosses with the same wPip group were mostly compatible, those involving different wPip groups exhibited partial or full incompatibility due to unique cid variants.

Rift Valley fever virus detection in susceptible hosts with special emphasis in insects

K. M. Gregor et al.

Summary: This study compared the immunohistological usefulness of several antibodies against RVFV epitopes in tissue samples from different hosts, revealing that nucleoprotein was prominently detected in mammal and mosquito tissues, while fruit fly tissues showed expression of glycoproteins only. Antibodies against non-structural proteins exhibited single cell reactions in salivary glands of mosquitoes and cell pellets.
