Synergy and regulation of antiphage systems: toward the existence of a bacterial immune system?

Florian Tesson et al.

Summary: Bacteria have a wide range of antiphage defense systems. Recent studies have found that these systems can be encoded within the same genome, suggesting possible interactions. This review explores the synergies and coregulations of these antiphage systems, suggesting a higher level of organization in prokaryotic antiviral defense similar to immune systems in animals and plants.

Organochlorine contamination enriches virus-encoded metabolism and pesticide degradation associated auxiliary genes in soil microbiomes

Xiaoxuan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that in organochlorine pesticide-contaminated soils, the relative abundance of bacteria was lower, but the diversity of viruses was higher, and these viruses contained genes related to pesticide degradation and metabolism. The diversity and abundance of these genes increased with the severity of pesticide contamination. Functional experiments demonstrated that virus-encoded genes were able to degrade pesticide precursors, promoting bacterial growth at sub-inhibitory pesticide concentrations.

Phages and their satellites encode hotspots of antiviral systems

Francois Rousset et al.

Summary: Bacteria have various genetic systems to defend against viral infection, including those within prophages. Phage satellites pose additional pressures on phages by hijacking viral elements. This study found that E. coli P2-like phages and their P4-like satellites carry genetic hotspots with anti-phage systems. These hotspots participate in inter-viral competition and shape dynamics between the bacterial host, P2-like phages, and P4-like satellites. Importantly, the anti-phage activity of satellites can benefit the helper phage during competition, turning a parasitic relationship into a mutualistic one.

A snapshot of the global drinking water virome: Diversity and metabolic potential vary with residual disinfectant use

Bridget Hegarty et al.

Summary: Viruses play an important role in microbial community ecology and evolution, but their effects in many environments, including drinking water systems, are still largely unknown. This study analyzed viral DNA sequences from drinking water metagenomes from six countries and found that environmental conditions and sample processing influenced viral composition. The use of free chlorine as a residual disinfectant resulted in lower viral taxonomic diversity and metabolic potential. Additionally, drinking water viruses carry antibiotic resistance genes and genes for survival in stressful conditions. These findings highlight the diversity of viral communities in drinking water systems and the potential impact on water quality.

Coevolution between bacterial CRISPR-Cas systems and their bacteriophages

Bridget N. J. Watson et al.

Summary: CRISPR-Cas systems offer adaptive, heritable immunity to bacteria and archaea against their viruses, but the diversity of these systems and their importance in phage defense are still being understood. This review discusses the evolution of CRISPR-Cas immunity against phages, how this leads to immune evasion by phages, and the potential coevolution between CRISPR-Cas systems and phages.

Reciprocal transcription factor networks govern tissue-resident ILC3 subset function and identity

Remi Fiancette et al.

Summary: Fiancette et al. used inducible transcription factor deletion models in mature tissue-resident ILCs to uncover complementary and competing transcriptional networks determining ILC3 phenotype and functional capacity. The study demonstrated the importance of ROR gamma t and ROR alpha in maintaining optimal effector functions in ILC3s, with ROR alpha being sufficient for robust interleukin-22 production in LTi-like ILC3 subset but not in NCR(+) ILC3s. Further, continued ROR gamma t expression was essential to restrain type 1 immunity associated transcriptional networks in NCR+ ILC3s coexpressing T-bet.

Ecological Approach to Understanding Superinfection Inhibition in Bacteriophage

Karin R. H. Biggs et al.

Summary: In microbial communities, viruses compete for host cells to infect and evolve inhibitory mechanisms to suppress their competitors, such as the superinfection exclusion mechanism. The Phi X174 bacteriophage shows a potential superinfection inhibition mechanism called the reduction effect, where a plasmid containing a fragment of the Phi X174 genome confers resistance to secondary infections. The results suggest that viral fitness often predicts the winner, but the reduction effect can also provide an advantage in modulating phage-phage competition and facilitating coexistence.

Enhanced mutualistic symbiosis between soil phages and bacteria with elevated chromium-induced environmental stress

Dan Huang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metal pollution affected the abundance, diversity, and composition of viral and bacterial communities in soils. Enhanced host-phage linkage and mutualistic phage-bacterium interactions were observed under greater environmental stresses, facilitating the spread of heavy metal resistance genes and adaptation of the microbial community to extreme habitats. Viral genomic analysis further demonstrated that lysogenic phages under higher Cr-induced stresses carried more auxiliary metabolic genes regulating microbial heavy metal detoxification.
