Emulation-based inference for spatial infectious disease transmission models incorporating event time uncertainty

Gyanendra Pokharel et al.

Summary: This paper proposes two approximate inference methods based on emulation techniques, which replace the computationally expensive likelihood function by a Gaussian process-based likelihood approximation. These methods offer substantial computational efficiency gains over standard Bayesian MCMC-based method and can be used to infer the transmission of complex infectious disease systems. Importance sampling-based methods tend to perform more satisfactorily.

Age groups that sustain resurging COVID-19 epidemics in the United States

Melodie Monod et al.

Summary: Research shows that in the United States, individuals aged 20 to 49 are the main source of COVID-19 transmission, playing a crucial role in the spread of the virus. Therefore, targeting interventions towards this age group is crucial in halting the resurgence of the epidemic and preventing COVID-19 deaths.

Impact and effectiveness of mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations, and deaths following a nationwide vaccination campaign in Israel: an observational study using national surveillance data

Eric J. Haas et al.

Summary: This study assessed the real-world effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 in Israel, showing high efficacy in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections, hospitalizations, severe disease, and death. As vaccine coverage increased, there were marked declines in SARS-CoV-2 outcomes, indicating that COVID-19 vaccination can help control the pandemic.

Numerical study of COVID-19 spatial-temporal spreading in London

Jie Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the movement of aerosolized viruses in a dense urban area in London, focusing on the spread and decay of COVID-19 from a hospital and railway stations. The findings suggest that virus concentration decreases rapidly near sources, but can travel up to hundreds of meters under certain meteorological conditions. The study emphasizes the importance of using face coverings in high-risk areas to reduce infection rates.

Excess mortality from COVID and non-COVID causes in minority populations

Christopher J. Cronin et al.

Summary: The total mortality in the US increased significantly in 2020, with excess deaths mainly attributed to non-COVID-19 causes, especially affecting males and minorities. Black, non-Hispanic males, although a small portion of the population, experienced a relatively higher number of deaths and life years lost.
