Probing a microviscosity change at the nematic-isotropic liquid crystal phase transition by a ratiometric flapping fluorophore

Ryo Kimura et al.

Summary: Understanding the microviscosity of soft condensed matter is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of chemical, physical, or biological events occurring at the nanoscale. This study demonstrates the use of flapping fluorophores (FLAP) as microviscosity probes capable of detecting small changes. By employing ratiometric fluorescence analysis, one of the FLAP probes successfully detects a macroscopic viscosity change during the thermal phase transition of a nematic liquid crystal. The study also discusses the influence of the chemical structure on the detection capability and the orientation of FLAP molecules in different states.

Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics Study of the Relaxation Pathways of Photoexcited Cyclooctatetraene

Huajing Song et al.

Summary: In this study, nonadiabatic and adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the transition-state dynamics of photoexcited cyclooctatetraene (COT). The simulations revealed an active excited to ground state relaxation pathway and a double-bond shifting mechanism, with results in good agreement with experimental data. These findings provide valuable insights into the photochemistry of COT and lay a foundation for further research on bond-order inversion and photoswitching processes.

Dynamic Polymer Free Volume Monitored by Single-Molecule Spectroscopy of a Dual Fluorescent Flapping Dopant

Yuma Goto et al.

Summary: The study utilized a dual fluorescent molecular probe to monitor nanoscale dynamics in polystyrenes, revealing that planarization of the molecule in the excited state only occurs when a large polymer free volume is available nearby, lasting on average 1.2 seconds. This investigation provides insights into the dynamics of molecular environments through statistical analysis and computational simulations.
