Copula miss-specification in REML multivariate genetic animal model estimation

Tom Rohmer et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of copula miss-specification, specifically non-Gaussian distributions, on the REML estimations of variance components in a bivariate animal model. The results show that when selection is performed randomly, the REML estimations are not significantly different from the true parameters, even for non-Gaussian distributions. However, when two phenotypes are measured on selection candidates, biases are observed in the variance components for high residual dependence in the case of non-Gaussian distributions.

Fluctuating Asymmetry and Developmental Instability, a Guide to Best Practice

John H. Graham

Summary: Best practices in studies of developmental instability have been developed over the past 60 years, but are often haphazardly applied in research papers. Most commonly, research designs lack randomization, replication, proper size scaling, attention to measurement error, and the recognition of additive and multiplicative errors.

Genetic parameters for quality traits by non-invasive methods and their G x E interactions in ocean cages and estuaries on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

I. Elalfy et al.

Summary: Fish quality traits, such as flesh composition and morphology, were found to have genetic variation and correlations with growth traits in different environments. Heritability estimates for growth, flesh composition, and morphological traits ranged from low to medium. Genetic correlations varied between different traits, with high positive correlations between growth traits and high negative correlations between moisture versus lipids, among others. Overall, new technological traits showed additive genetic components and correlations with growth traits.

Genetic Estimates for Growth and Shape-Related Traits in the Flatfish Senegalese Sole

Israel Guerrero-Cozar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that genetic breeding programs can be successfully implemented in Senegalese sole to optimize production, with high heritabilities and correlations. Shape quality is crucial in flatfish aquaculture, particularly in the case of the highly elliptic Senegalese sole with body morphology that slightly changes with age and size.

Genetic parameter estimates and identification of SNPs associated with growth traits in Senegalese sole

Israel Guerrero-Cozar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic parameters of four growth traits in Senegalese sole, finding that females grew faster than males, there was high variation of sex ratios by family, and high heritabilities and genetic correlations among traits. Using a low-density SNP array, two significantly-associated SNPs with most of the traits at both ages were located in gtf3c4 and mtfp1, which are relevant for genetic breeding programs in this species.

Body-shape trajectories and their genetic variance component in Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.)

Stefanos Fragkoulis et al.

Summary: Juvenile fish body shape experiences rapid change followed by a stable period before becoming adults. The correlation between juvenile and adult body shapes ranges from 0.22 to 0.76. The heritability estimates of the final phenotype ranged from 0.370 to 0.511, with a heritability of 0.173 for the phenotypic integration rate. The study demonstrates a substantial additive genetic component in the variance of ontogenetic trajectories.
