Performance-based sub-selection of CMIP6 models for impact assessments in Europe

Tamzin E. Palmer et al.

Summary: We have developed a performance-based assessment for selecting CMIP6 models for Europe based on their ability to capture important large-scale processes and represent the present-day European climate. This assessment can be used to filter the ensemble and create a smaller subset of models that maintain model diversity and the filtered projection range. The selection process shifts the projected temperature range towards greater warming. We also weigh the unfiltered ensemble against global trends, which shifts the distribution towards less warming, revealing the tension between regional climate processes and global mean warming trend in model selection.

Common Error Patterns in the Regional Atmospheric Circulation Simulated by the CMIP Multi-Model Ensemble

Summary: This article introduces the ability of global climate models to reproduce regional atmospheric circulation types, and finds significant similarities between models through pattern correlation matrix. These similarities, which are largely unrelated to model performance, can be used as statistical dependency weights.

Mitigating Climate Biases in the Midlatitude North Atlantic by Increasing Model Resolution: SST Gradients and Their Relation to Blocking and the Jet

Panos J. Athanasiadis et al.

Summary: This study examines the response of certain biases in the midlatitude North Atlantic to increasing oceanic resolution. It shows that increasing resolution can significantly reduce cold sea surface temperature bias and improve the representation of European blocking and jet variability. The study also finds a relationship between meridional sea surface temperature gradients and atmospheric circulation, indicating the importance of North Atlantic SST anomalies in forcing significant atmospheric responses.

Rarest rainfall events will see the greatest relative increase in magnitude under future climate change

Gaby Joanne Gruendemann et al.

Summary: According to 25 CMIP6 model predictions, the magnitude of extreme rainfall events is likely to increase in the future to a greater extent for the most extreme events. The rarer the event, the more likely it is to increase in a future climate. These results are consistent across models, though with regional variation.

Summary: Global climate models play a crucial role in climate research, but they were not originally designed to reproduce regional-scale climate. Efforts have been made to improve the models themselves and refine their output at the regional scale using downscaling methods. However, it is still challenging to correct errors in the large-scale circulation represented by the global models. The latest generation of models performs better on average, with a moderate relationship between performance and horizontal resolution in the atmosphere.

More accurate quantification of model-to-model agreement in externally forced climatic responses over the coming century

Nicola Maher et al.

Summary: Understanding the contributions of model-to-model differences in the forced response and internal variability to uncertainty in climate projections is crucial. While reducing model-to-model differences can increase confidence in projections, separating these uncertainties is challenging in traditional multi-model ensembles. However, utilizing single model initial-condition large ensembles can help to distinguish between these uncertainties.

Summary: The study assessed the effectiveness of selecting representative subsets of 5 GCMs from a full ensemble of 20 GCMs for projecting crop yields, demonstrating that these subsets could provide accurate estimates of both the mean and spread of the full ensemble. The results showed that the selected subsets outperformed randomly selected subsets in terms of smaller error and larger range.

Summary: The study revisits several emergent constraints proposed in prior model intercomparisons using models from CMIP6, evaluating both the robustness of these constraints and proposing more rigorous methods for quantifying constrained projected changes. Three emergent constraints are assessed, providing insights into their usefulness in better understanding and predicting future climate change.

Estimating Regionalized Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change Over Europe by Performance-Based Weighting of CORDEX Projections

Frederiek C. Sperna Weiland et al.

Summary: Ensemble projections of future changes in discharge over Europe show large variation, with different weighting approaches influencing the consistency of the projections. Weighting methods favored projections from the same General Circulation Models, but high weights obtained through past good performance can provide deviating projections for the future. In Central Europe, differences between models become more pronounced, highlighting the need for robust weighting methods to increase the reliability of change signals.

The potential for structural errors in emergent constraints

Benjamin M. Sanderson et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that strong relationships in emergent constraints may arise from common structural model assumptions, but oversimplification could lead to overconfident constraints. While emergent constraints have potential to be powerful tools for understanding ensemble response variation, their naive application to reduce uncertainties in unknown climate responses could result in bias and overconfidence.
