A subwavelength atomic array switched by a single Rydberg atom

Kritsana Srakaew et al.

Summary: Coherent control of the collective optical properties of an array of quantum emitters can be achieved by driving a single ancilla atom to a Rydberg state. This allows for spatial control over the optical response and enhances light-matter coupling at the level of single quanta. These results represent progress towards realizing quantum coherent metasurfaces, controlled atom-photon entanglement, and deterministic engineering of quantum states of light.

Dynamic population of multiexcitation subradiant states in incoherently excited atomic arrays

Oriol Rubies-Bigorda et al.

Summary: The article presents a feasible approach to transient generation of multiexcitation subradiant states in finite-sized ordered arrays of dipole-dipole coupled quantum emitters via incoherent driving of the atomic ensemble. It is shown that maximal coupling to long-lived subradiant states is achieved when only half of the atoms are initially excited. The nature of the resulting states is characterized by calculating the dynamic fluorescence spectrum of the emitted light. Furthermore, the role of coherent interactions during the decay process of sufficiently dense atomic arrays is elucidated, resulting in a coherently driven radiation burst that reduces the chances of preparing multiexcitation subradiant states.

Collective photon emission of two correlated atoms in free space

Stefan Richter et al.

Summary: By preparing two distant emitters in entangled Dicke states through single photon detection, this study investigates the subsequent spatiotemporal photon emission. The emission patterns of the second scattered photon demonstrate spatial superradiance as well as subradiance depending on the parity of the quantum state established. Ultrafast single-photon resolving cameras with high spatial resolution are employed to reveal the spatiotemporal emission characteristics.

Collective Radiative Dynamics of an Ensemble of Cold Atoms Coupled to an Optical Waveguide

Riccardo Pennetta et al.

Summary: This article experimentally and theoretically investigates collective radiative effects in an ensemble of cold atoms coupled to a single-mode optical nanofiber. The results reveal the microscopic dynamics of the system and the progressive growth of collective interactions between atoms and a guided photon. The experimental measurements demonstrate superradiant decays in the forward-propagating guided mode and the progressive growth of the collective response of the atomic ensemble.

Superradiance-Mediated Photon Storage for Broadband Quantum Memory

Anindya Rastogi et al.

Summary: Superradiance refers to the collective emission of light from an excited ensemble of atoms, with a faster timescale than that of individual atoms. We demonstrate a superradiance memory mechanism in a rubidium atom ensemble, showing high bandwidth storage for short pulses. These high-bandwidth quantum memories have potential applications in fast processing of optical and microwave photonic signals.

Subradiance with Saturated Atoms: Population Enhancement of the Long-Lived States

A. Cipris et al.

Summary: The study explores subradiance caused by dipole-dipole interactions, where a 200-fold increase in the population of these modes was experimentally demonstrated as the saturation parameter of the driving field is increased. The enhancement in population is attributed to a mechanism similar to optical pumping, while lifetimes are unaffected by pump strength.

Storage and Release of Subradiant Excitations in a Dense Atomic Cloud

Giovanni Ferioli et al.

Summary: The study reports the observation of subradiance in dense ensembles of cold Rb-87 atoms and validates that atom number is the key parameter governing subradiance. It is demonstrated that multiply excited subradiant states are composed of a superposition of singly excited states that decay independently. The experimental procedure implemented to release the excitation stored in long-lived modes is a first step towards tailored light storing based on subradiance.

Summary: This study demonstrates quantum control of an incident single-photon pulse by engineering a two-dimensional atomic array's collective response, achieving high-fidelity absorption and storage. By controlling the atomic level shifts and suppressing scattering, quantum wave-front control and nearly zero reflection of transmitted photons are achieved. The proposed schemes allow for entanglement generation and quantum-state transfer between photons and the cavity, forming functional quantum interfaces.

Many-body localization in waveguide quantum electrodynamics

N. Fayard et al.

Summary: This study investigates a waveguide quantum electrodynamics model, exploring the interplay of atomic position disorder, multiple scattering of light, quantum nonlinear interactions, and dissipation, and suggests the potential existence of a many-body localized (MBL) phase. The findings show that when atoms are less than half excited, the system may exhibit an MBL phase, while rapid initial dissipation in a system initially in a delocalized phase can lead to a dynamical transition to an MBL phase. These phenomena have practical implications and can be observed in modern experimental setups.
