Heavy baryons in compact stars

Armen Sedrakian et al.

Summary: This article reviews the physics of hyperons and -resonances in dense matter in compact stars. The approach to the equation of state and composition of dense nuclear matter in different regimes is presented. The static properties of compact stars with hyperons and -resonances are discussed in light of recent constraints from astrophysics observations. The effects of kaon condensation, strong magnetic fields, and rotation on the composition and properties of hypernuclear stars are also examined.

Constraining equation-of-state groups from g-mode asteroseismology

Hao-Jui Kuan et al.

Summary: This study shows that buoyancy-restored modes inside neutron stars depend sensitively on both the microphysical and macrophysical properties of the star, and are promising avenues for recovering information concerning the nuclear equation of state. Using general relativity to calculate perturbations of static, stratified stars, the study classifies g-space groupings based on various physical parameters and demonstrates how to determine the group the g modes belong to.

Universal relations for rapidly rotating cold and hot hybrid stars

Noshad Khosravi Largani et al.

Summary: In this study, the universality of relations between global parameters of compact stars is investigated. The study confirms that these relations hold for both cold and hot nucleonic equations of state (EoS), as well as for EoS models that include a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to deconfined quark matter. The accuracy and coefficients of these universal relations are determined through fitting to computed data.

Summary: A set of hyperonic equations of state (EoS) are constructed by assuming SU(3) symmetry and using a covariant density functional theory approach. The EoS is constrained by terrestrial experiments at low density and modeled by varying the nuclear matter skewness coefficient and symmetry energy slope at high density. The results show that the model can support a range of static and rotating stellar masses under certain conditions.

Universal relations for neutron star f-mode and g-mode oscillations

Tianqi Zhao et al.

Summary: Research has found that the f-mode and g-mode of neutron stars have different characteristics. The frequency and damping time of the f-mode are correlated with the compactness and tidal deformability of neutron stars, while the frequency of the g-mode depends on the properties of phase transitions. These findings are important for understanding and studying the internal structure and physical properties of astrophysical objects.

Gravitational-Wave Instabilities in Rotating Compact Stars

Eric L. Bratton et al.

Summary: The stable rotation limit of neutron stars is determined by gravitational-radiation reaction (GRR) driven instabilities, which are moderated by shear viscosity and bulk viscosity. Among these instabilities, the f-mode instability plays a predominant role. In this study, we determine the instability periods of the f-mode for different relativistic models of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) and find that it sets the limit of stable rotation for cold neutron stars.

Impact of NICER's Radius Measurement of PSR J0740+6620 on Nuclear Symmetry Energy at Suprasaturation Densities

Nai-Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: By directly inverting several neutron star observables in the three-dimensional parameter space for the equation of state of super-dense neutron-rich nuclear matter, this study shows that the lower radius limit for PSR J0740+6620 sets a much tighter lower boundary than previously known for nuclear symmetry energy. The super-soft symmetry energy leading to the formation of proton polarons in this density region of neutron stars is clearly disfavored by the first radius measurement for the most massive neutron star observed reliably so far.

Impact of the PSR J0740+6620 radius constraint on the properties of high-density matter

Summary: The X-ray pulse profile modeling of PSR J0740+6620 using data from NICER and XMM-Newton observatories has led to a measurement of its radius, providing insight into the neutron star equation of state (EoS). The analysis mildly disfavors EoSs supporting a disconnected hybrid star branch and reveals core matter with strong interactions violating the conformal sound-speed bound. Maximum mass of compact stars from gravitational wave events with finite-temperature equations of state

Sanika Khadkikar et al.

Summary: Researchers have proposed and verified a set of relations regarding the global parameters of hot and fast-rotating compact stars, independent of the equation of state, including a relation between mass-shedding and static configurations. By applying these relations to the GW170817 event, an upper limit on the maximum mass of cold, static neutron stars was deduced, suggesting that considering the temperature of merger remnants can relax previously derived constraints on the maximum mass of cold, static compact stars.

Updated universal relations for tidal deformabilities of neutron stars from phenomenological equations of state

Daniel A. Godzieba et al.

Summary: In this study, universal relations are validated and recalibrated using a large set of phenomenological EOSs, expanding to softer EOSs and larger compactnesses. Neglecting higher-than-leading-order tidal deformations of NSs can result in up to 3.5 radians of dephasing in waveform models from 20 Hz to merger. The new fits yield a NS radius smaller by about 500 meters compared to literature results, highlighting the importance of updated fits for future gravitational wave data analysis.

Constraining the equation of state in modified gravity via universal relations

Victor Danchev et al.

Summary: This paper generalizes EOS-independent universal relations to neutron stars in massive scalar-tensor theories and proves that the resulting relations for scalarized neutron stars are indeed EOS independent to a large extent. Multiple constraints on the EOS within scalar-tensor theories are derived, showing that the allowed set of EOS can differ significantly compared to Einstein's theory. This demonstrates the importance of modified gravity effects when imposing constraints on the EOS.
