Future socio-ecosystem productivity threatened by compound drought-heatwave events

Jiabo Yin et al.

Summary: The frequency of compound drought-heatwave events is expected to increase by tenfold globally due to climate change, resulting in significant negative impacts on vegetation and socio-economic productivity. This is mainly attributed to the negative coupling between terrestrial water storage and temperature, which constrains the formation of terrestrial carbon sink. It is projected that over 90% of the global population and gross domestic product will be exposed to increasing risks of compound drought-heatwaves in the future, with poorer and more rural areas experiencing more severe impacts. These findings provide crucial insights for assessing and mitigating the adverse effects of compound hazards on ecosystems and human well-being.

PROBLEMS OF COGNITIVE STRATEGIES AND EMOTIONAL REGULATION OF TEACHERS IN MODERN EDUCATION

Rashid Jabbarov et al.

Summary: This article examines the manifestations of cognitive strategies and emotional regulation among teachers. The study involves 64 teachers with different academic backgrounds and teaching at different faculties. The findings suggest that age plays a role in shaping cognitive strategies and emotional self-regulation of teachers. Cognitive strategies and expressive suppression of emotions are associated with different qualities of teachers. Adequate self-regulation of emotion is more significantly related to cognitive strategy than expressive suppression. The study also reveals correlations between cognitive reappraisal and personality traits, as well as emotional intelligence and resilience among teachers.

Global monthly gridded atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations under the historical and future scenarios

Wei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the historical global monthly distributions of atmospheric CO2 concentrations and generated future spatial distributions based on different scenarios. Including the nonuniform CO2 distributions is important for improving the realism of global climate modeling and predicting the socio-economic implications and mitigation strategies for climate change.

Global gridded GDP data set consistent with the shared socioeconomic pathways

Tingting Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an approach based on nighttime light images and population data to provide a spatially explicit global gridded GDP projection dataset. The dataset covers over 800 provinces, accounting for more than 60% of the global land surface and includes gridded GDP projections for the historical period and 2030-2100 under different scenarios. This dataset can enhance the applicability of GDP data for socioeconomic and climate change research.

Drought risk and water resources assessment in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Drought, a natural disaster, has significant and long-lasting implications for all aspects of human life. The increase in drought risk due to global warming and rapid economic development has particularly affected rural communities. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct scientific drought risk assessments and utilize water resources effectively. This study focuses on assessing drought risks in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which is water-scarce and prone to severe drought disasters, to provide guidance for risk assessment, disaster prevention, and water resource allocation.

Projection of droughts and their socioeconomic exposures based on terrestrial water storage anomaly over China

Jiabo Yin et al.

Summary: This study utilized satellite observations and global climate models to predict the changes in dry/wet conditions in China, estimating the impacts of future drought risks on population and GDP. The results suggest that most regions of China will face a continuous drying trend, with significant increases in drought duration and intensity.

Future global socioeconomic risk to droughts based on estimates of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability in a changing climate

Yujie Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the consistent and equitable global drought risk assessment for multiple regions, populations, and economic sectors under various climate change scenarios. Climate change is projected to increase future drought hazards, leading to damages to socioeconomic systems. The findings suggest that the inequality in future socioeconomic risk to drought among countries is predicted to increase with climate change.

Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change

Yadu Pokhrel et al.

Summary: Using ensemble hydrological simulations, it is found that climate change could reduce TWS in many regions, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The decline in TWS translates to an increase in future droughts, highlighting the need for climate change mitigation and improved water resource management and adaptation. By the late twenty-first century, the global land area and population in extreme-to-exceptional TWS drought could more than double.

Prediction of Future Natural Suitable Areas for Rice under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs)

Peng Su et al.

Summary: Suitable areas for rice cultivation will continue to be concentrated in current major production areas, with a decrease in subtropics but an increase in tropics and high-latitude regions. Overall distribution patterns are expected to remain relatively unchanged, with a decrease in suitable areas in the short term and an increase in the medium term.

Increased economic drought impacts in Europe with anthropogenic warming

Gustavo Naumann et al.

Summary: Climate change exacerbates drought risk in Europe, with potential for significantly increased losses in the future due to global warming, especially in southern and western parts of Europe. However, keeping global warming below 2 degrees C can help avoid most impacts in the affected regions.
