Single-atom copper embedded in two-dimensional MXene toward peroxymonosulfate activation to generate singlet oxygen with nearly 100% selectivity for enhanced Fenton-like reactions

Peizhen Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, single-atom copper anchored on Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets (Cu-SA/MXene) was developed by molten salt etching for the generation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The catalyst exhibited a high selectivity of 99.71% toward O-1(2) generation by activating PMS and showed outstanding catalytic activity for multiple pollutants and strong resistance to inorganic anions. The Cu single atoms with three oxygen coordination environments (CuO3) were found to be more favorable for PMS absorption and selectively adsorbed the terminal oxygen of PMS to promote the generation of SO5.-, resulting in the generation of O-1(2). A continuous-flow wastewater system with the catalyst dispersed on a poly (vinylidene fluoride) membrane showed stable catalytic activity for polycarbonate plant wastewater treatment over 8 hours.

Generation mechanism of singlet oxygen from the interaction of peroxymonosulfate and chloride in aqueous systems

Anna Wang et al.

Summary: Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is a widely-used disinfectant and oxidant that reacts with chloride (Cl) to generate singlet oxygen (1O2). The mechanism of 1O2 formation from PMS and Cl interaction was confirmed, and the oxygen atoms in 1O2 were found to come from the peroxide group of PMS. 1O2 showed higher yield and played important roles in microplutant degradation and DNA damage, but it also posed potential risks to human health.

Summary: Controlling the electronic structure of Cu-N-4 sites through heteroatom doping engineering can optimize the activation ability of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Experimental results show that the electron-deficient Cu-N-4/C-B exhibits the highest oxidation capacity, while the electron-enriched Cu-N-4/C-P leads to a decrease in activation ability. Synthesis of Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets and comparison study toward the OER properties induced by different metal ion doping

Fenghua Chen et al.

Summary: Regulating the chemical composition and nanostructure and introducing dopants into two-dimensional nanomaterials is an effective strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts. In this study, Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets with an ultrathin layer structure were synthesized via a solvothermal process and ultrasonic exfoliation. Different dopants (M = Fe3+, Cr3+, Mn2+, and Ni2+) were then introduced by cation exchange method, and their effects on the electrocatalytic activity of Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets in alkaline media were investigated. The results showed that the doped M-Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets exhibited different electrocatalytic properties, mainly due to the charge redistribution caused by the electronic interaction between the dopant metal ions and Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets.
