The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental and Emotional Health of Athletes: A Systematic Review

Lori Jia et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the mental and emotional health of athletes globally, with an increased risk of poor mental health outcomes for female athletes and those in higher levels of play. Providing psychological support, access to training facilities, and utilizing healthy coping mechanisms can improve mental health outcomes for athletes.

Monitoring Muscle Oxygen Asymmetry as a Strategy to Prevent Injuries in Footballers

Aldo A. Vasquez-Bonilla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between muscle oxygenation levels and muscle oxygen saturation asymmetry at rest with sports injuries. The results revealed that higher levels of muscle oxygen saturation asymmetry and Delta SmO2 slope 2 were associated with high-severity injuries. Moreover, an asymmetry greater than 15% and an increase in accumulated load were identified as factors that increase the probability of injury.

From heart to muscle: pathophysiological mechanisms underlying long-term physical sequelae from SARS-CoV-2 infection

Corinna Serviente et al.

Summary: The long-term sequelae of COVID-19 can impact various organs and tissues beyond the lungs, including the heart and muscles. This review highlights evidence of cardiac impairments, persistent endothelial dysfunction, and reduced exercise tolerance in individuals previously infected with COVID-19, regardless of the severity of the initial infection. Understanding the physical consequences, underlying biological mechanisms, and long-term effects on future disease risk is crucial given the large number of people recovering from COVID-19.

Detraining Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic on Physical Fitness, Cytokines, C-Reactive Protein and Immunocytes in Men of Various Age Groups

Seung-Jae Heo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the detraining effects of the COVID-19 confinement period on physical fitness, immunocytes, inflammatory cytokines, and proteins in different age groups. The results showed that physical inactivity during the pandemic led to a decrease in muscle mass, an increase in fat mass, enhanced inflammation, and reduced immunocytes. These effects were particularly pronounced after the age of 50.

Association between SARS-COV-2 infection and muscle strain injury occurrence in elite male football players: a prospective study of 29 weeks including three teams from the Belgian professional football league

Evi Wezenbeek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and muscle strain injury in elite athletes. The results show a five-fold increased risk of muscle strain after SARS-CoV-2 infection. All athletes who developed a muscle strain after infection were injured within the first month and had a longer quarantine period. This may be due to short-term detraining effects and potential pathological effects of the virus.

The Impact of Long COVID-19 on Muscle Health

Montserrat Montes-Ibarra et al.

Summary: The available evidence suggests that long COVID negatively affects muscle health and quality of life. This impact may be more pronounced in older adults due to age-related declines in muscle health. The mechanisms by which long COVID affects muscle health involve a combination of systemic inflammation, physical inactivity, poor nutritional status, and inadequate dietary intake. Recovery and rehabilitation services with adequate nutrition, mental, and social support should be explored as potential interventions to improve muscle health in these patients.

Giuseppe Annino et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of injuries in Italian Serie A professional soccer players before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a significant increase in muscle injuries in the post-COVID-19 season compared to the previous seasons. The players with longer duration of COVID-19 positivity had a higher number of muscular injuries. The total number of days with positive cases in the team was significantly related to the total number of muscular injuries.
