Challenges to observation of many-body localization

Piotr Sierant et al.

Summary: This study investigates the time dynamics of 1D disordered Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains and finds that the regime of slow power-law decay of imbalance persists even at disorder strengths exceeding the critical disorder strength for many-body localization (MBL). However, when the disorder is replaced by a quasiperiodic potential, an emergence of a stable pattern of imbalance oscillations is observed. The study highlights the challenges in experimentally observing MBL phenomenon.

Avalanches and many-body resonances in many-body localized systems

Alan Morningstar et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigate the avalanche instability and many-body resonances in strongly disordered spin chains exhibiting many-body localization (MBL). We find that finite-size systems behave like MBL within the MBL regimes, and we identify landmarks that divide the MBL regimes into different subregimes based on the onset of avalanches and many-body resonances.

Information-theoretic memory scaling in the many-body localization transition

Alexander Nico-Katz et al.

Summary: A key feature of many-body localization is the breaking of ergodicity and the emergence of local memory. Existing studies have partially captured the dynamics of local memory, but suffer from various limitations. This study introduces the dynamical Holevo quantity to address these limitations and provides a comprehensive analysis.

Observation of energy-resolved many-body localization

Qiujiang Guo et al.

Summary: The study of many-body localization phenomenon revealed the crucial role played by initial energy using a quantum processor with programmable superconducting processor. The onset of localization was found to occur at different disorder strengths with distinguishable energy scales, as observed through time-evolved observables and quantities related to many-body wave functions. This opens avenues for experimental exploration of many-body mobility edges in MBL systems.

Observation of Stark many-body localization without disorder

W. Morong et al.

Summary: Thermalization is a common process in statistical physics where a physical system reaches an equilibrium state defined by properties like temperature, even in isolated quantum many-body systems. However, many-body localization (MBL) can lead to the preservation of a non-thermal state. Recent theoretical work suggests that quantum many-body systems with a spatially increasing field, but without disorder, can also exhibit MBL, known as 'Stark MBL'. Studies with a trapped-ion quantum simulator have observed Stark MBL, showing that the quantum system can evade thermalization despite the absence of disorder.

Stark Many-Body Localization on a Superconducting Quantum Processor

Qiujiang Guo et al.

Summary: Quantum emulators provide a way to observe fine aspects of closed quantum many-body systems, including thermalization and the many-body localization (MBL) phenomenon. Researchers have built a quantum device with 29 functional superconducting qubits to emulate Stark MBL, demonstrating the potential of quantum emulators in helping understand nontrivial quantum many-body problems.

Universality in the onset of quantum chaos in many-body systems

Tyler LeBlond et al.

Summary: Through the study of two one-dimensional lattice models, it is found that the onset of quantum chaos at infinite temperature exhibits universal behavior, with the onset marked by maxima of typical fidelity susceptibilities scaling with the square of the inverse average level spacing. The strength of integrability- or localization-breaking perturbations decreases with increasing system size.
