Influence of Bronsted Acid-Site Density on Reaction-Diffusion Phenomena that Govern Propene Oligomerization Rate and Selectivity in MFI Zeolites

Elizabeth E. Bickel et al.

Summary: In this study, the propene oligomerization reaction catalyzed by Bronsted acid zeolites was investigated. It was found that the dependence of oligomerization rates on H+ site density in MFI zeolites varied under different propene pressures. These findings highlight the importance of H+ site density in influencing the reaction kinetics and product composition.

Activation of n-pentane while prolonging HZSM-5 catalyst lifetime during its combined reaction with methanol or dimethyl ether

Tomas Cordero-Lanzac et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergies between oxygenates (especially dimethyl ether) and n-pentane at low OX/nC(5) ratios, enhancing n-pentane conversion while reducing catalyst coking rate. The analysis of used catalysts reveals that dimethyl ether exhibits higher reactivity than methanol in forming coke structures.

Efficient production of renewable hydrocarbon fuels using waste CO2 and green H2 by integrating Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and olefin oligomerization

Ruxing Gao et al.

Summary: Recently, PtL and PtG technologies have been considered as promising pathways for renewable energy storage and CO2 mitigation. In this study, two hybrid processes integrating F-T synthesis and olefin oligomerization were proposed to enhance the production of value-added liquid hydrocarbons. Process modeling and case study showed that both processes are efficient for converting CO2 into high-value hydrocarbons.

Alternative acid catalysts for the stable and selective direct conversion of CO2/CO mixtures into light olefins

A. Portillo et al.

Summary: Different acid catalysts, such as SAPO-34, have been tested in the direct synthesis of light olefins. The presence of strongly acidic sites in SAPO-34 favors the reaction mechanism and shape selectivity, resulting in higher olefins selectivity. However, the catalysts undergo deactivation due to coke deposition, and the regeneration of SAPO-34 requires the removal of soft coke and combustion of hard coke.

A review on the valorization of CO2. Focusing on the thermodynamics and catalyst design studies of the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether

A. Ateka et al.

Summary: The direct synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) on bifunctional catalysts is attractive for valorizing CO2 and syngas from biomass gasification. Performing methanol synthesis and its dehydration in the same reactor favors the formation of DME from CO2 and CO2 co-fed with syngas. Catalyst performance has been improved by modifying the composition and properties to enhance activity, selectivity, and minimize deactivation. The core-shell configuration of the bifunctional catalyst improves stability by separating the environments of methanol synthesis and its conversion into DME.

Hydrocarbon Products Occluded within Zeolite Micropores Impose Transport Barriers that Regulate Bronsted Acid-Catalyzed Propene Oligomerization

Elizabeth E. Bickel et al.

Summary: Brønsted acid zeolites play a significant role in catalyzing alkene oligomerization reactions, which results in the formation of heavier hydrocarbon products with varied size and branching. The intrazeolite transport limitations strongly affect the measured rates, an aspect that has been overlooked in previous studies. Under reaction conditions that favor the formation of heavier products, the intrazeolite diffusion limitations become more severe.

Fundamental kinetics model of acidity-activity relation for ethylene oligomerization and aromatization over ZSM-5 zeolites

Fang Jin et al.

Summary: The kinetics of ethylene oligomerization and aromatization over ZSM-5 with different Si/Al ratios was modeled using a single-event concept and Bronsted kinetic model to establish a quantitative acidity-activity relationship. A hybrid genetic optimization algorithm was developed to efficiently fit the changes in product distribution obtained with different catalysts. The regressed kinetics model can predict the influence of zeolites with the same topology but different acidity on the product distribution.

Mingjie Liao et al.

Summary: The synthesized mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites showed better stability and higher initial activity in 1-hexene oligomerization compared to common ZSM-5 zeolite. The catalytic activity was closely related to the number and distribution of acid sites, with fewer and moderate strength of Bronsted acid sites inhibiting cracking and coke formation.

Summary: This study provides a complete and detailed mechanism of heterogeneous Ni-catalyzed oligomerization on solid acids for efficient production of desired products. By combining experimental, computational, and modeling studies, the bifunctional effects of nickel and acid sites on ethylene oligomerization are elucidated, highlighting the potential for optimal catalyst design. The selective oligomerization of ethylene to light, linear alkenes via the Cossee-Arlman mechanism by Ni2+ and further catalysis by Bronsted H+ sites are systematically discussed, emphasizing the importance of reaction conditions and catalyst properties.

Coke deactivation and regeneration of HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts in the oligomerization of 1-butene

Marta Diaz et al.

Summary: The deactivation of HZSM-5 catalysts in 1-butene oligomerization is mainly caused by the confinement of oligomers (soft coke) in the catalyst matrix. Soft coke is removed at 400 degrees C by TPS-N-2, while hard coke is removed by combustion. Two types of hard coke are distinguished, with the fraction located in zeolite micropores being more refractory to combustion.
