Effects of Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) addition on HCCI-DI engine performance, combustion and emission

Ibham Veza et al.

Summary: The addition of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) as a fuel can decrease CO2 and NOx emissions in an HCCI-DI engine, but has no significant effect on HC, CO, PM, and soot emissions. Furthermore, engine performance is improved with the addition of ABE.

Effects of EGR on combustion and emission characteristics of PODE/methanol RCCI mode at high load

Junheng Liu et al.

Summary: In order to extend the high-load operation range of PODE/methanol dual-fuel RCCI combustion mode, the influence of EGR addition on combustion process, stability, and pollutant formation of the RCCI engine under high load and pilot injection strategy were investigated. The results show that increasing EGR ratio delays combustion start timing and decreases peak values of heat release formed by PODE pilot injection combustion. The addition of EGR decreases NOx emissions by 42.6% without increasing soot emissions.

Effect of pilot injection strategy on the methanol-mineral diesel fueled reactivity controlled compression ignition combustion engine

Avinash Kumar Agarwal et al.

Summary: In this experimental investigation, the effects of different pilot injection techniques on reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion were explored. The study found that both advanced and retarded start of diesel injection (SoIdiesel) timings resulted in combustion noise and misfire. The use of pilot injection was suitable for the RCCI mode, especially at lower premixed ratios (rp) of methanol. Optimizing the rp of methanol and adopting a suitable injection strategy can significantly improve the combustion, performance, and emissions characteristics of the RCCI mode.

Computational comparison of the conventional diesel and hydrogen direct-injection compression-ignition combustion engines

Rafig Babayev et al.

Summary: Research shows that the non-premixed compression-ignition neat H-2 engine can achieve comparable or higher brake thermal efficiency than diesel, with 5-10% of total useful work contributed by H-2 injections at TDC. Additionally, H-2 fuel-air mixing in the free-jet phase is significantly higher due to hydrogen's gaseous state, low density, high injection velocity, and transient vortices, but the H-2 jet momentum is lower than diesel.

Potential of hydrogen/diesel reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion from the perspective of the second law of thermodynamics

Ming Jia et al.

Summary: Hydrogen/diesel RCCI outperforms gasoline/diesel RCCI in reducing exergy destruction due to higher combustion temperature, shorter combustion duration, and distinctive oxidation pathways. A higher premixed energy ratio can elevate exergy output work and reduce exergy destruction, while a higher initial pressure increases exergy destruction but also boosts exergy output work by reducing exergy transfer through heat transfer.

Leveraging hydrogen as the low reactive component in the optimization of the PPCI-RCCI transition regimes in an existing diesel engine under varying injection phasing and reactivity stratification strategies

Amitav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This research investigates the performance, emission, and stability characteristics of a single-cylinder common rail direct injection diesel engine using a novel interposed zone of partially premixed and reactivity-controlled combustion in conjunction with injection phasing and reactivity phasing strategies. The study determined the optimum interposed zone using response surface methodology and found that increasing the rate of hydrogen induction improves the stability of the interposed combustion zone. The optimized regime resulted in significant reductions in soot, unburnt hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions, indicating the feasibility of achieving advanced low-temperature combustion concepts without major design modifications.

Numerical study on knock characteristics and mechanism of a heavy duty natural gas/diesel RCCI engine

Weijian Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the knock phenomenon of a reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine fueled with natural gas/diesel is numerically investigated. The knock mechanism is explained and a strategy to suppress knock is proposed. The knock characteristics are studied by monitoring pressure oscillations at different positions in the cylinder. The results show that under high load conditions, the pressure oscillation amplitude is significant at the center and edge of the cylinder. The knock mechanism is analyzed using various methods such as pressure difference, temperature isosurface, and heat release rate. It is found that the knock in the RCCI engine is mainly caused by end-gas auto-ignition. The effects of pilot oil injection timing and compression ratio on knock are further studied. It is confirmed that diesel knock and end-gas knock can coexist in the same cycle of RCCI engine operation, and proper adjustments can effectively suppress knock.
