A Double-EKF Orientation Estimator Decoupling Magnetometer Effects on Pitch and Roll Angles

Summary: This article presents a method for accurate orientation estimation using low-cost inertial and magnetic sensors. The method decouples the effects of magnetometer measurements on pitch and roll estimates by decomposing the orientation into tilt quaternion and heading quaternion. Orientation Estimation by Partial-State Updating Kalman Filter and Vectorial Magnetic Interference Detection

Summary: This article introduces a novel partial state update strategy in the extended Kalman filter (PS-EKF) to eliminate the influence of magnetic measurement on two level angles and inertial sensor biases. Additionally, a new magnetic disturbance detection technique (vectorial detector) considering both the norm and direction of the magnetometer measurement is proposed. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed PS-EKF method can effectively resist magnetic interference on level angles and sensors biases.
