Compensatory growth response of juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L. Nauyuk) under various cyclical food restriction and refeeding periods.

N. R. Le Francois et al.

Summary: The study suggests that overwinter feed restriction followed by spring refeeding can improve the productivity and sustainability of Arctic charr production. The results indicate that limited food restriction or prolonged starving can lead to complete growth compensation and improved feed conversion efficiency. Furthermore, Arctic charr subjected to a fair level of food reduction can achieve similar growth to unrestricted fish. Size adjustment of digestive organs and changes in enzyme activity are observed during the feeding restriction and refeeding periods.

Full compensatory growth before harvest and no impact on fish welfare in Atlantic salmon after an 8-week fasting period

Malthe Hvas et al.

Summary: The study shows that Atlantic salmon exhibit compensatory growth after fasting, eventually reaching similar weight and length as fed controls. Males were larger than females, and immature fish were larger than maturing fish. No aggressions were observed during the fasting period, and welfare status was not impacted in the short or long term.

Offshore aquaculture of finfish: Big expectations at sea

Bernat Morro et al.

Summary: In recent years, offshore aquaculture has gained momentum with the production of marine fish species being relocated offshore. This review revisits past predictions and expectations with a focus on oceanographic features, fish diseases, and operational challenges. Understanding the physical capabilities of farmed fish species, studying potential site oceanography, and developing an economic plan are key to successful offshore aquaculture.

Effects of weekend starvation and the duration of daily feeding on production parameters of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

Gokhan Tuncelli et al.

Summary: Weekend starvation may not lead to full growth compensation in domesticated rainbow trout, and there are clear differences in compensation capacity between tanks. Typically, the fish are unable to fully compensate for the lost growth, leading to lower feed intake and growth compared to control fish.

Effect of fasting on freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare (Lichtenstein; Pisces: Cichlidae) development

Jonas Henrique Motta et al.

Summary: Fasting had various effects on the development of juvenile freshwater angelfish, with 12 and 15-day fasting periods forcing juveniles to use energy reserves. This study suggests that beyond 15 days of fasting may have fatal consequences for this species during this life stage. The mobilization of energy stored in the liver during fasting was observed in juvenile angelfish.

Combined effects of dietary starch:Protein ratios and short cycles of fasting/refeeding on Nile tilapia growth and liver health

Elison Silva de Macedo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the combined effects of different dietary starch:protein ratios (SPR) and short cycles of fasting/refeeding (FR) on Nile tilapia juveniles. The results showed that short cycles of fasting/refeeding do not promote compensatory growth in Nile tilapia. It is recommended to feed Nile tilapia around 2g daily with low-SPR diet.
