Summary: Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with bright blue fluorescence were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The NCDs were characterized for their morphology, elemental composition, and optical properties. The results showed that the NCDs had good water solubility, high dispersibility, and satisfactory fluorescence quantum yield. They were successfully applied for the detection of bilirubin with good linearity and low detection limit.

Photoluminescence mechanisms of red-emissive carbon dots derived from non-conjugated molecules

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synthesis and emission mechanism of red-emissive carbon dots (R-CDs). Different R-CDs were successfully synthesized using non-aromatic precursors such as citric acid with the assistance of ammonia. The addition of ammonia played a key role in the synthesis process, shifting the emission wavelength of the carbon dots. Mass spectrometry analysis and computational modeling revealed the emission mechanism, providing guidance for the controlled synthesis of R-CDs from other non-aromatic precursors.

Surface-Modified Carbon Dots with Improved Photoluminescence Quantum Yield for Color Conversion in White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Kohei Sato et al.

Summary: Surface modification of p-phenylenediamine-derived carbon dots using 4-morpholinoaniline increased the photoluminescence quantum yield in chloroform. The improved photoluminescence quantum yield was observed only for the surface modification after the formation of the p-conjugated structure of the carbon dot core. This finding gives us an idea to design carbon dots with high photoluminescence quantum yield for color conversion in white-light-emitting diodes.
