Interaction-Aware Decision-Making for Automated Vehicles Using Social Value Orientation

Luca Crosato et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a framework based on Social Value Orientation and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) for decision-making in the presence of pedestrians. The framework trains decision-making policies with different driving styles using state-of-the-art DRL algorithms in a simulated environment. It also introduces a computationally-efficient pedestrian model suitable for DRL training.

Learning to interpret novel eHMI: The effect of vehicle kinematics and eHMI familiarity on pedestrian' crossing behavior

Yee Mun Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of vehicle kinematic information and external Human Machine Interface (eHMI) designs on pedestrian crossing decisions. The results show that using flashing headlights as a yielding message can lead pedestrians to cross the road earlier during vehicle deceleration. However, the visibility of a novel slow pulsing light band only has a slight effect on crossing initiation time, and message familiarity also plays a role in pedestrian decisions.

A Human Factors Approach to Validating Driver Models for Interaction-aware Automated Vehicles

Olger Siebinga et al.

Summary: A major challenge for autonomous vehicles is to predict the behavior of surrounding human drivers. The validity of driver models used for this prediction is rarely validated, limiting the interactive capabilities of autonomous vehicles. This article proposes a workflow for validating driver models based on natural human driving behavior, which can support the development of appropriate driver models for future automated vehicles.

Road users rarely use explicit communication when interacting in today's traffic: implications for automated vehicles

Yee Mun Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the communication strategies used by drivers and pedestrians while crossing the road, highlighting the infrequent use of explicit communication techniques and the reliance on vehicle-based movement information. The findings suggest that pedestrians are more likely to use cues from the movement of vehicles when crossing the road.

Computational modeling of driver pre-crash brake response, with and without off-road glances: Parameterization using real-world crashes and near-crashes

Malin Svard et al.

Summary: This study extended an existing driver model to incorporate off-road glance behavior and successfully fitted the model to real-world rear-end crash and near-crash data. The research revealed that drivers may have partial visual looming perception during off-road glance behavior and suggested that reduced responsiveness to visual looming could be a causation factor in crashes without off-road glances. The results also showed that a model parameterized on less-critical data, such as near-crashes, could accurately predict driver behavior in highly critical situations, such as crashes.

Pedestrian Models for Autonomous Driving Part II: High-Level Models of Human Behavior

Fanta Camara et al.

Summary: This review article examines the interaction between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians, organizing current research into a hierarchical taxonomy from low-level image detection to high-level psychological models. While there are good models for optimal walking behavior, high-level psychological and social modeling of pedestrian behavior remains an open research question with many conceptual issues to be clarified.

Invisible Hands and Fine Calipers: A Call to Use Formal Theory as a Toolkit for Theory Construction

Donald J. Robinaugh et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing concern among researchers about the crisis in psychological theory, with theories lacking an accumulation of knowledge. Despite Paul Meehl's proposed solution over 40 years ago, little improvement has been seen. To advance psychological theory, researchers must be provided with better tools to generate, evaluate, and develop theories.
