Emotion and Reason in Political Language

Gloria Gennaro et al.

Summary: This paper examines the use of emotion and reason in political discourse. Using computational-linguistics techniques, the study measures emotionality in six million speeches given in the U.S. Congress from 1858 to 2014. The results show that emotionality intensifies during times of war and is highest in speeches about patriotism. Additionally, emotionality has significantly increased since the late 1970s, with higher levels observed among Democrats, women, ethnic/religious minorities, the opposition party, and members with extreme ideological voting records.

The Ideological Predictors of Moral Appeals by European Political Elites; An Exploration of the Use of Moral Rhetoric in Multiparty Systems

Linda Bos et al.

Summary: The study shows that Western European political elites use a substantial amount of moral appeals in their political communication, with commonalities in usage greater than differences, but the found differences are multidimensional. Particularly in less scripted communication, political elites tend to differentiate themselves from opponents in appeals to different moral foundations.

How social learning amplifies moral outrage expression in online social networks

William J. Brady et al.

Summary: Moral outrage is widespread on online social networks, and social learning processes amplify these expressions over time. Positive social feedback increases the likelihood of future outrage expressions, while users also conform their expressions to the norms of their social networks. Norm learning overshadows reinforcement learning when normative information is readily observable, especially in ideologically extreme networks.

Moral-Language Use by US Political Elites

Sze-Yuh Nina Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that there were partisan differences in the use of moral language by U.S. political elites as political power shifted over time. Overall, politicians used more moral language when they were in a position of lower political power, regardless of party affiliation. Both Democrats and Republicans used more moral language in different contexts, such as on Twitter after the 2016 presidential election or in Congressional transcripts when they were in the minority.

The language of politics: ideological differences in congressional communication on social media and the floor of Congress

John T. Jost et al.

Summary: Theory and research in political psychology suggest that liberals and conservatives differ in personality traits, value priorities, cognitive styles, and motivational tendencies. Text analysis can be used to study these psychological characteristics unobtrusively, and this study found that conservative legislators use more language related to religion, power, and threat, while liberal legislators use more language related to affiliation and achievement.
