Research status of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers processing on bulk metallic glasses (BMGs)

In recent years, research on the surface modification of metal glass by laser processing has increased, indicating the interesting interaction between laser and metal glass surface. Femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers are the most prominent in this field due to their narrow pulse width, high energy density, and short action time. This review summarizes the research field, introduces the properties and applications of metallic glass, the processing characteristics of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers, and explains the complex process between laser and metallic glass from a microscopic perspective. Additionally, the influence of microscopic mechanism on the structure, as well as the properties of micro-nano structures, are also discussed, which is of great significance to the surface functionalization of metallic glass.
In recent years, the number of research work on the surface modification of metal glass by laser processing has been increasing, indicating that the interaction between laser and metal glass surface is interesting. Short pulse laser and ultrashort pulse laser processing are the most prominent in this field because of their narrow pulse width, high energy density and short action time with materials. In particular, femtosecond lasers and nano-second lasers provide great possibilities for high quality, high efficiency and low loss processing of metal glass. This review summarizes this specific research field, introduces the properties and applications of metallic glass, the processing characteristics of femtosecond lasers and nanosecond lasers, and explains the complex process between laser and metallic glass from a microscopic perspective. In addition, this paper also analyzes the micro-nano structure and macroscopic morphology, and discusses the influence of microscopic mechanism on the structure. On the other hand, the properties of micro-nano structure are also discussed, including mechanical properties, optical properties, wettability and biocompatibility, which is of great significance to the surface functionalization of metallic glass.
